    Question filling transmission

I am curious to find out what tool would be best to put transmission fluid in my 4 speed.
Very tight to get access to. Funnel doesn't seem to work. Royal Purple was put in two years ago but seems to have leaked out.
What might be the best oil to use ?
Thanks for the advice in advance. 1964

i use a 60cc disposable syringe. get them from local pharmaceutical supply house. remove plunger and close off the tip of the syringe with your finger, then dump the 90 wt gear oil in the cylinder, then re-install the plunger. 60cc(2 oz) is largest syringe i could get. clean the rubber seal after use as the petroleum products trash the rubber seal. mike

I use a small hand pump which is supplied with Sta-Lube gear oil. You can put whatever gear oil you want in the Sta-Lube container, install the pump, and very easily pump the fluid into the fill on the transmission case. This pump also works perfectly for rear axle lube.

        Wayne:

Already two good answers to your question. To add a third, I use a 6 foot length of 7/16 or 1/2 inch id Tygon tubing from the hardware store. Attach my funnel to one end, run the other end from the fender area down past the engine and to the trans fill hole. Clip off any (gross) excess tubing to avoid sags/kinks.

Put a pan under the trans fill hole and fill from the engine compartment until the trans fluid runs out the fill hole. Then stop and install the filler plug.

Use same technique for rear axle......tubing can be much shorter.......but same principal. Also, use the same fluid, except add 2 small bottles of GM Posi additive (if needed).

Regarding the fluid, I recommend GM #1052271, SAE 80W-90 wt. However, I would first use a suction gun and remove all of the Royal Purple, so you are not mixing fluid brands/types.

I've also used a small plastic turkey baster.

Follow Joe's advice. In fact their 80W-90 GL5 gear oil is just what the trans and axle need. These pumps have a piece of vinyl tubing on the output nipple, which should be long enough to reach the fill plug, or you could buy a longer piece at a hardware store, if needed.

...try to put 2.5 pints into the trans (or 3.7 into the axle) with a turkey baster? No way!

I guess I should have clarified I only topped off the trans with the baster, not filled it from empty as that would take a lonnnnnnnng time.

Then you could also do it the simple way and have it changed at a shop that has the proper equipment to suck out the old and pump in the new. I found one at a car wash lube combo place, and they loved to do 4 speed Corvettes. When looking for such a place, be sure to ask the right questions and get the right assurances that they have what you need. Most of the chain quick lube places don't have specs that go back as far as our C-1's and C-2's, nor the proper heavy weight gear lube.

I filled my 65 4sp with one of these. It holds about a pint.

I removed the end with the tube and filled it with gear oil then shot it right it. Took 1 minute and was easy and clean.

Also try your local marine supply house. Have used a small pump to change oil in lower housing of In/Out Board, it came with oil. Know one can purchase just pump - a cheep one for under $20.

                        Thanks all.
I used Marks idea . I bought a suction hand pump at Part Source.
Worked well on trans and Diff. Ready for the warm weather and top down.
It has been a long winter up noth.

The oil I purchase comes in a quart bottle with the spout on it. I purchased a section of soft clear plastic hose and secure it on to the spout, place the hose into the fill hole and then squeeze the bottle.

I use the quart container that the 90 weigt comes in and a foot long length of clear poly 1/2 " tubing. Squeeze container and the oil flows right in. I do have a lift so i may be at an advantage.
