What would be the correct water pump for a nov 69 build 427? I am getting different answers from vendors is it a #284 pump like the judging manual states or is it a #960 pump? Thanks

Re: late 69 427 water pump
Most likely, the originally installed pump would have been the GM #3940960 casting. However, given the NCRS and NCCB "6 month rule", there may have been 3856284 castings which would be considered date-correct for your car. I doubt that any of these would have been actually originally installed on the car, though. I think you will find it difficult or, even, impossible to find a '284' pump casting that was manufactured within a month, or so, of the car's build date which would be the most likely period when the original waterpump used on it was cast. That's because I think the '284' was not being manufactured as late as October, 1969.
By the way, the '284' casting is MUCH easier to find than the '960' notwithstanding "dates". The '284' was, by FAR, the most common "short leg" waterpump ever manufactured for big blocks and was the only casting used for all 65-68 Chevrolet big blocks. The '960' is, essentially, a Corvette-only piece since by the time it came into use only Corvettes and MD/HD trucks used the short leg style waterpump. Some SERVICE waterpumps for 65-68 applications also used this casting but not for too long since this casting was only manufactured for a relatively short period of time---18 to 24 months. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: late 69 427 water pump
Anthony,
My November 19th built 435 has a 3940960 water pump with a casting date of J289 which I believe is October 28th 1969
Interesting that it's not listed in the J/G; I'm not sure how we missed that.
