C1 trivia speedo driven gear adapter

By the way I've seen people use it for the inside tack drive cable that was short and poping out of the gear! You decide!

Don't forget the rear end ratio "family". I don't have it in front of me, but certain grps. of rear end ratios, will have a different gear on the trans. shaft that drives this gear. How would I know?

Yes, all driven gears are not interchangeable in any given transmission. It depends upon what DRIVE gear is installed. DRIVEN gears are easily changed; DRIVE gears are NOT easily changed.

The 18-22 (silver) tooth DRIVEN gears are interchangeable. The 22 (green)-25 tooth DRIVEN gears are interchangeable. However, the DRIVEN gears from these 2 series are not interchangeable outside of their series. In other words and for example, if you remove an 18-22(silver) tooth DRIVEN gear from a transmission and decide you need, say, a 23 tooth gear for a changed rear gear ratio, then you must also change the transmission speedometer DRIVE gear installed in the transmission.

          Joe and Dave:
Ok, so I have a rebuilt correct 1957 T10 to put in my '57 but it has no driven gear/assembly. I can see the drive gear inside. Is there a way to count the ridges/worms to tell what driven gear family will work without replacing it? Thanks, Stan

            Stanton----

No, unfortunately the number of teeth on the 2 most common DRIVE gears are the same. In the transmission, it's going to be very difficult to measure the OD of the DRIVE gear which is what you need to know. However, if you could measure the dimension of the gear from the shaft to the very outer edge of the teeth, you might be able to figure it out. With the adapter out, you should be able to make this measurement pretty accurately with the depth gauge which is part of most vernier calipers.

The above dimension X 2 + ID of the DRIVE gear= OD of the DRIVE gear

At the moment, I don't know what the ID of the drive gear is but that should be easy to determine; it's the same for all 1957-70 T-10's and Muncies.

With the DRIVE gear OD calculated, here's how it is:

1.85" OD DRIVE gear is compatible with 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22 (silver) tooth DRIVEN gears

1.77" OD DRIVE gear is compatible with 22 (green), 23, 24, and 25 tooth DRIVEN gears.

As you can see, there is not a huge difference in OD between the 2 DRIVE gears, so you need to perform the measurement I described accurately. I've never done it this way but I think it's "do-able".
