I was able to keep the original title on a '72 Chev that I bought in Washington State, I just asked the Deprtmet of Trasportion to return it and they did with a stamp on it saing it was void.

I was going to get a " Horseless Carriage" Plate for my 67 (15.00 for 5 years). I found out that you have to surrender your original title to do this. You get a new "Horseless Carriage " plate and title dated 2009. This is new Jan. 1st 2009 in N.M. I paid 84.00 for one year( 20.00 was MVD Express, no one hour take a number) and kept my old title.
