    rear grill vents

I'm taking the car apart for paint and I see under the 2 grills behind the rear window looks like a thin piece of tin or something the same size of the opening that completely blocks the opening. Inside the car under the grill area there are 2 caps on each corner that I guess block anything coming through the vent area. (It's a 72 coupe with air). The A I M shows a vent assembly and actuator but there doesn't look like there was ever anything there. My question is, are those covers supposed to be there or am I missing a whole lot of stuff?

The vents from inside the car are blocked when you get air conditioning. In the right light you should be able to see through the outside vents all the way to the ground.

See the C-60 section of your 1972 AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) for an illustration of how this works (I think there is one there -- I don't have AC so I am a little rusty on it).
