Re: C2 BB (Splash Shields) identification.
In addition to the subject of inboard C2 BB splash shields, there are also some differences on the RH outboard shield, seen on SOME late 396's (LH battery locaton) and A FEW '66 427's (one reported even with RH battery).
Pics show a tab spot welded to fill the indentation to clear the RH battery bracket when the car's battery is on the driver side (in theory, on 396's and all C60 cars). Yet none have surfaced on air cars. So as it stands, this rare feature seems to point to BB cars for a short period (6 mos ?) of production.

Below is the shield with the added filler plate from a 66 with side exhaust, VIN #5644. (and an NOS without the filler)
The shield for A/C and 396 cars had it own part number, 3833398.Last edited by Michael H.; September 23, 2009, 05:14 PM.- Top

Wayne is correct. He and I discussed this a few years ago but I'm not sure anyone was following it.

I found several older Threads in the archives where both of you discuss this factory modified RH small splash shield. The part number (GM 3833398) is also listed in the 1967 AIM (C60-B1), but I get the impression from the other Threads that this modification ended with the 1966 model year.
Has anyone seen or heard about this RH splash shield modification on 1967 small blocks with C60?- Top

I can't find that GM #3833398 was ever a SERVICE-available part. However, it's left side counterpart, GM #3833397, was available in SERVICE and was applicable to 1963-67 with C-60 as well as 1965 with L-78. The curious thing is that both part numbers date from 1963.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I just checked the GM 3833397 number, and if I understand correctly, that number is for the fiberglass battery access panel (1963-1967 all C60, and 396 in '65) that mounts in the front LH wheel well. In the 67 AIM this "Filler - Fr. Skirt" panel is located on C60-B3. This would certainly seem to tie both parts (3833397, 3833398) as being C60 (or 1965 BB) specific.
The other discussions on this subject were too old to allow using the "quote" button, but from those discussions (search "3833398") it seemed that the RH small splash shield modification might have only been actually used in production from 1963-1966.
I found no mention of usage in 1967, but it is still shown in the 1967 AIM, so I would like to find out if this factory modification was still being used on 1967 cars with C60. It might be fun to try to duplicate this factory modification, but I don't want to go to the trouble if the modified RH splash shield was no longer being used in 1967 production.- Top
