C1 sheet metal shield under transmission tunnel

Can someone comment on the sheet metal shield under the transmission tunnel on my 59? I have read a few other threads that seem to indicate this is original. However, a friend with a 60 advises his car does not have the sheet metal shield. I also see the shield in this thread:

    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthread.php?t=57952&highlight=transmission+tunn el+metal&uid=8757

Is this original and what is its purpose if so?

Not sure about 59's. I know 61/62 had the tunnel brace. Have you looked at the 59 AIM? I looked on one of the 60' body I had and can see it is there also. So not sure...

Maybe ask Tim Mickey Ian. It looks like it should be there ! I can't remember mine having one when it was up on the lift.
I personally put the tranny in and cross member so I thought I would of seen something like you have if it was there ? HHMMM someone must have an idea hello out there.

both my 57's have the metal stamped steel plates. i'd guess their purpose is to protect the fiberglas floorpan in the event of a front u-joint failure. perhaps the Dipstick of Lyle( aka U-Joints-R-Us) can comment.mike

Never seen any sheet metal shields on 61 & 62's...58-60's had a had a separate piece screwed to the underbody, as did 56 & 57's
