Replacement VIN

Good story about the replacement of a VIN in last Restorer. What's that about pulling off left rear wheel an geting a pencil rubbing in the narrow space between the metal and fiberglass? Have not seen much on this. Is this on all cars?

That is the location where the VIN is stamped on the frame on all C2's (and possibly C3's?). Very hard to read with the body on frame.

I have attached a photo of my frame numbers for my 66 roadster #23590. It is not easy to do with the body on but can be done assuming your frame isn't badly rusted. I used a specially cut mirror about 1 inch x 6 inches with a flexible handle made of tape attached to it. After cleaning the area and finding the numbers its a matter of using some dum-dum or plumper's putty to hold the mirror in position to photograph. You will need a digital camera with a macro setting and you will need to try different camera angles and lighting. This shot took at least 20 tries. It is a lot of work but with a definite payoff.

I can see mine (71) with a small mirror and flashlite, top side of frame above left rear wheel, also stamped on top frame rail under drivers door,very hard to see.
