      Roger,

I have done a body off and all the previous posts are correct. It is a very slippery slope. There are some items that are a must when pulling the body off such as steel gas lines and brake lines. The items that are imposable to change with the body on. You would have to regiment your self keep it below 3,000 to 4,000. If you keep the suspension together and sand blast it with all the parts on the frame you will do it for less. It gets out of control very easily. It can be 20k with out a paint job.

I don't see it possible to keep it in the $2500 to $3500 range. Unless some things are not done. you have to figure out what your objective is here. What do you want when your finished ? A 99% top flight car that you can PV and then maybe go for a Duntov award. If your looking to make a nice driver and Saturday show and shine thats different. It gets expensive know matter which way you go.
Also you may plan to not restore something but when you put that part along side everything else its not going to look good. There goes the budget. That's also why you see unfinished restorations for sale. Guys got into them and found out it can be a money pit and either can't aford it or there in over there heads. Roger take a long look at this before you start and don't be in a hurry.

          Re: Chassis Restoration Cost

Thanks Mike, Joseph, and Kenny for the comments.I appreciate it.

Maybe I should start a new thread and I'm sorry if I am wearing this one out but would ya'll be willing to kick around a couple more questions on this subject?

          1. I have available a 4-post lift. Can this be used to make an *easy* job of lifting the body? Would it make it *easy* enough that it wouldn't be too painful to simply lift the body more than once, e.g., suppose one would like to do the chassis restoration in stages (due to time and budget concerns)?

          2. I'm sure that someone has prepared a list of the parts (part names/numbers/cost) that they had to purchase in order for them to perform their chassis restoration? Would someone be willing to share a copy of their list? I'd like to put together an estimated parts cost but without the body being off the car it would be hard to know what needs to go on the list.

Plan on $10.000 and if you don't get into everything being NCRS corect you should be ok. Things to run up the bill are body mounts rusted out and do you have the welder and skill to do it yourself. Their may still be some vendors out their that do this job for around 15K so that should help in the estimate.

Rpger, That list would very from car to car. Depending on the shape of everything. Are you replacing springs all bolts with repo's. Are your trailing arms in good shape. A lot are rusted and need to be replaced. What needs rebuilding steering box, power steering pump, trans, rear end ect. You need to look at a catalog and start writing down the parts you know or want to replace. You will be doing fuel and brake lines. You will need clamps and hoses possibly bolts for the clamps. Tie rods, ball joints, are you going to have them riveted in.Thats what I do to figure out and I start ordering. When I did my car I ordered parts for years getting ready for it. I couldn't afford to do it all at once. Once I had everything I felt I needed I started to take the car apart. It adds up pretty quick.
As far as lifting the body you will need somewhere to set it down. There are plans for a wooden crate dollie which is easy to build. The 4 post lift will work but not needed for lifting the body off. It would be handy for setting it back on.

I was just north of 12K into my entire rolling chasis.

and I did 98% of the work.

Mike, now that is a really great suggestion!! That is a great way for me to spread out the cost. I'll think about doing it that way.
