67 Wheel Paint Color

I know that correct wheel paint color has been discussed at length numerous times however I have an interesting situation here which I would like to obtain opinion on.

My 67 Coupe still has its original spare in the tub. It a Goodyear Power Cushion white wall and though I won't trust it for 10 seconds, it still looks excellent in appearance.

The wheel however appears to be Grey painted, not Argent as are the rest of the original Rally Wheels. It is DC coded and dated same as the others but the rim color is distinctly different. It has never been painted and has the usual age rust present.

Were the spares a different color than the others ?

Howard, I can't give you an answer for sure, but I recall back in the late 60's I used to go to the strip and we would remove the spare to save wight. Seem to recall is was a different color. Bill.

In production, the face of all five wheels were painted argent silver, at the same time, and went to the tire mount/balance machine that way, and then to the line for installation. Service rally wheels were painted gray at Kelsey-Hayes so they wouldn't rust in warehouse storage.

Thanks for your comments, my spare as painted grey appears original and has same codes as the road wheels. The tire appears to have been never used and there is no evidence of the rim ever being painted. Perhaps I have an oddball here.

Howie, are you sure it's not one of your GTO rims? LOL.

If the date codes are exactly the same as the four factory argent wheels then one would think it also had to come from the factory or anorher possibility is that they were all service replacement wheels and someone painted four of them argent silver.
This is a mystery that you may never solve Howie.
