    Amazing new technology 3D ENGINE

    Jay Leno taped this information about new amazing technology for reproducing parts that are just impossible to find. It is worth a look.

      We have this where I work. At my old job we also had a machine that would build a wax model, that could be sent to a casting house and cast immediately.

      I've designed parts in the morning, and held them in my hand the next day.

          that scanner is only $2500. The 3D printer is quite a bit more, but you can send the scanned files to someone and they can make them pretty inexpensively.

            I just think it is so neat for that really rare stuff we can't find, like the metal brace on a 57 "air box" that goes to the air cleaner. RPO 684/687 front and rear backing plates, and other "un-obtainium parts.

              Would be nice to make some of those $375 bolts to cover the cost of purchasing the 3D scanner and printer!!!

              regards,
              Rob

                  I have seen similar stuff at the tech shows, but honestly, this just blows my mind! Leave it to Jay to show this to us. One cool dude with one cool car collection!

                    That technology has been in use by the OEM's for years as part of the "rapid prototyping" progression (which is why there are no more wood model-makers in the OEM business).

                      It is cool but if you have the old part to scan, can't you just use it for casting a new one?

                        Back in the early 1990s my employer had a piece of equipment which produced parts by "stereo lithography". It was rather amazing and it could produce parts from computer files. It is probably obsolete as technology has improved so quickly.
                        In addition, computer simulation can literally produce an assembly from files of pictures of the individual parts.

                            Hello James;

                            Very nice of you to post this link. Jay is a credit to the car hobby/business.

                            Do you think they could make some new parts for my old body? Gravity is getting to me.

                            Thank you.
