    67 crossmember bracket and cable

    I need some help identifying this bracket and cable that is riveted to the underbody and has a cable going through a welded on bracket to the crossmember. This pic is not of my car but one I found on the net. It is at the very top of the picture. The reason for the inquiry is that I have a squeaking noise coming from under the back part of the console/jack compartment area that is driving me batty. The noise is "road related" and on smooth roads is non-existent. Rough roads are a different story! Note that my car still has a rubber "sheath" around the cable that is partially worn through. Any thoughts?

    John, The squeak is probably from the spare tire inside your bucket. Probably from the tire being oversized or reproduction. Solution: Remove the tire, rub vaseline on the inside of the bucket, replace tire and squeak will disappear.

      He has the "original" tire in the bucket. Never on the ground. Car is a 33000 mile original 300hp that reached DUNTOV back in 1995. John recently bought it and plans to drive it some. He is signed up to DRIVE and show at LAKE TAHOE Regional.

        Hi John
        If I understand you desription, the piece secured to the X-member at the top of your pic is not a factory installed piece.

          The cable going thru the welded bracket is for the inboard seat belts. They connect to the bolts and reinforce the the connection to the seat belts.

            Thanks for the answer. It all makes sense now. Do you know if it was that way on all C2's or just 67? I will be working on getting a new piece of rubber around the cable and see if that stops the noise!

              Re: 67 crossmember bracket and cable

              Hello;
              Electrical shrink tubing will work as a replacement for the rubber insulation on the seat belt cables.
              Don't know if that's a good idea on an original Corvette as described by James.

              Hope this helps.

                I may try that under what is left of the original boot/cover.

                  John, I used the heat shrink tubing on my resto. Purchase some that will slide over the ball and thru the hole. Then shrink it slightly, it should NOT be tight on the metal cable. Also the cable is exposed for about 3/4 inch on each end. Bead blast all the parts and clearcoat before installing tubing.
