    Duke question??

    Duke
Who packages the full synthetic motor oil for Wal-mart? It is called super tech and is quite a bit less expensive than all the other's on the shelf. There aren't that many company's into synthetic's so I would think it is one of the major company's.Thanks in advance! Tom Stanton

    Re: Duke question??

like i posted the other day wally world brand oil is all recycled.
    ]

Joe, Wally's synthetic oil is a recycled oil that has gone thru the ISO/SYN process and comes out as a Gp III synthetic. The maker is Safety-Kleen. Warren and Quaker State compete for the monthly contract on Wallys dino and blend. Their synthetic is a decent oil but don't run it over 5,000 as it falls apart after that.

FWIW, Warren and Citgo oils are now under the Warren umbrella. Most likely will start seeing Citgo oils showing up at the local Walmart. Warren and Citgo are decent oils and may be a great value depending on price.

      Why synthetic?

I just bought a gallon of SuperTech 15W-40 CI-4. The label just says "manufactured in USA for Walmart Stores, Inc", but doesn't say who.

I hope you aren't using an S-category oil.

I was looking at synthetic oils to put in my wifes HHR. It has the 2.4 engine and is a little pig when it come to gas. I thought I might change to synthetic and improve the mileage. The only other car I have right now is a 08 vette. That uses Mobil 1 so I figured I could stock one oil and 2 filters and have everything covered. Thanks for the help. Tom

It would take a very carefully controlled test to determine if "synthetic" offers a fuel mileage improvement - say a 0W-30 syn versus a 10W-30 conventional, and the data would likely show nothing or so small as to be insignificant, especially when taking into account cost difference.

The 0W-30 would offer sightly less internal friction during warmup, but at normal operating temperatures the viscosity would be about the same, so no difference.

The reason some OEs are using 0W-20 is supposedly "fuel economy", but it makes me cringe.

So Wally anounces 2 Billion in bonuses to HOURLY employees today. Says they could do this because they showed a major increase in market share. Man! These people have to be stopped! Where is the Union outrage? I hate these outfits that offer such a variety of products including Engine oils that people want and at reasonable prices. The nerve!

I went to wally world this afternoon and the only thing on the jug say's Marketed by wal-mart. No where on the jug does it say recyled oil. I was under the impression that recyled oil has to be marked on the label if it was recyled. I may be wrong but I think that it was that way a few years ago! Tom

Lubrizol packages some of Safety Kleens products in Canada and blends for them. Lubrizol also did some blending for Walmart, I'm not sure if they still do walmarts oils.

                  Re: Duke question??

How would a motor oil re-processor obtain a base of only synthetic oil to begin with in order to produce a re-cycled synthetic? This would indicate that lube shops seperate syn motor oil from diesel motor oil from other oil motor when draining crankcases which I don't believe happens. The plant process of separating syn oil from other motor oils would seem to be a rather involved process. I know such a process never came up in Chem I, Chem II or Organic Chem back in the day. May be time for a course in Chem TDB!
                  Best regards,

That's a question for Clem. He is the one who says their syn comes from recycled oil.

I just go by API category and viscosity range. The rest you can argu about until the cows come home.

what i posted above came off of a motor oil website and i assume the guy knows what he is talking about. i remember there was a pissing contest between amsoil and mobil because amsoil said that mobli 1 was made from a base stock or something to that effect and not a true syn.

I am no expert on oil's but I am quite sure recyled oil has to be marked that way. And I agree that it would be difficult to seperate. At my buddy's shop all the waste oil goes in 1 tank and is picked by the recyler.

I don't think I can read another oil debate. I have been using Valvoline from straight weights to multi-weights to now synthetic for 45 years. It all comes down to what you feel is right for you. Buy a case or two and be done with it already and change it regularly, whatever that means to you!

If you're still buying by brand name then you must have not read any of the "debates" about engine oil.

no matter what you decide if you have a GM car under the factory warranty and use synthetic oil it had better meet GM spec GM4718M or they could deny your warranty claim. GM4718M would be printed on the bottle.
