    Firewall rivets for 1970

I am looking to install a couple of used factory clips to hold wires / hoses to firewall. Also am planning to install a stud plate / stud to mount ac box to firewall. All, I believe, use aluminum rivets. Does anyone know what size / type rivets they are, where to get them, or suggestions on how to install them? Note I have same question for (1) rivet for underhood alarm switch and (2) rivet to hold hose clip that attaches to driver's fender lip, adjacent to master cylinder. thanks, Steve

    Hi Steve,
On my 71 the rivet near the mst/cyl is a 'pop' type rivet, not the more usual large flat headed rivet used many places. My original has a head that's a little 'flatter' than a common pop rivet today, so I'd file it down a tiny bit before I set it.
Sorry I can't help on the alarm rivets.
    Regards,
    Alan

      Steve,

the Alarm rivets are 3/16" solid aluminum. The flat head goes on the inside of the firewall and the small end gets peened on the outside onto the alarm switch bracket.

Installation requires a backing tool to hold the flat head of the rivet in place (body dolly or flat stock) Then you need a rivet set tool. You dont need to buy one you can make one out of an old chisel or similar piece of steel. What you do is drill a 3/16" hole about 1/8" into the rivet set tool and then that will give you the factory "squish" when you set the rivets. Setting the rivet is a 2 man job (sometimes the significant other comes in handy here) While you are backing the flat end of the rivet with the dolly you place the rivet set tool onto the rivet sticking through the firewall and alarm switch and using a hammer peen the rivet ove till it looks correct and secures the bracket.

If you have never done this it is best to practice peening a few rivets before you try it on the firewall.

Alarm switch is as described by others -- see first photo.

Hose clip to fender lip on my 1970 IS an aluminum rivet -- see second photo.

I have no comment about the sizes since I left that to the UAW 39 years ago.

          Hi Terry,
Your second picture is really interesting .
My 71 is quite different. Not only is it a 'pop' type rivet, it's in the vertical surface of the gutter not the horizontal surface as your 70 shows. I think that would mean the clamp used would need to have been changed or 'bent' in order to receive the rivet.
          I wonder why the change......
          Regards,
          Alan

That rivet may be unique to 1970 OR to early 1970, I'm not sure. There might be some clue in the 1970 AIM. My car is A29 on the trim tag. If I can get around to the AIM(s) this weekend, I;ll take a look.

The filament tape is thanks to the UAW.
