Cadium Dichromate Finish
Can anyone tell me how to refurbish or duplicate the cadium dichromate finish on a part such as the headlight vacuum canisters? Thanks Paul

Paul, Most platers today cannot duplicate the original finish. Today's dichromate is quite pretty but very artificial.
I see power brake boosters that are refinished on show cars. Very nice looking but not correct. Maybe someone out there has a favorite plater that they have "trained" to do the correct finish.
The 64-65 FI's have a dichromated starting solenoid. My plater does them the same as original. Or pretty close. At least they don't come out greenish..

The original finish is more likely to be zinc dichromate as opposed to cad. GM specs called for zinc or cad, and zinc was primarily used if not exclusively. When I have restored zinc dichromate parts (see attached), getting the finish correct requires quite a bit of trial and error. First the part must be replated with zinc. It is then dipped in a dichromate solution. The temperature and submersion time will determine the final color and finish.
