    Glass polishing and restoration

Has anyone used the porter cable buffer with lake county glass pads and diamondite glass restoration cremes available from autogeek? If so, what were the process and steps, how many applications and how were the results? I need to work on my '69 windshield with the correct (original?) glass.

    Thanks...Don

As a followup questions; how many 4 oz bottles of the polish does it take to do a windshield. Does each section need be re-polished multiple times to achieve the desired results?

Are you polishing scratches out or just some acid rain spots? I have polished scratches out of glass before and it will leave a bit of distortion if the scratch is very deep. If it is just acid rain spots, it should work OK. If it is scratches it is a lot of work and will take quite a bit of polish. So the amount you need will depend on the amount of polishing you have to do.

        Don -

You may not like the result when driving at night - I've driven two cars with "polished" original windshields at night, and the headlights from oncoming traffic really created a lot of "dazzle" in the glass that was extremely distracting. Neither one exhibited any issues in the daytime.

My '69 Z/28 has its original windshield, with the usual pitting, and I'm not going to touch it with anything.

My 63 Vette has it's original windshield that saw service in the sandstorms of the southwest desert the first year or so of it's life. I made trips to Las Vegas and the Grand canyon picking up a number of stone chips along the way. I remember where and when I received the bigger ones with fondness. I do not like the night time driving like it is, but have just not been able to undertake any corrective measures. I bought all the polishing materials and the correct buffing wheel many years ago, but was afraid of what the results might be if I did it myself due to all the negative stories I had heard. I considered replacing it with a new dated one, but then learned that the tinting wouldn't match my side windows and would be incorrect to NCRS judging standards. Guess I will take this dilema with me to my grave. Oh yes! new prescription glasses help a lot!
