    63 Fuel Pump Dates/Fonts

I have three variations of 4657 pumps and need help to understand differences:

    ________Font____ Font________Frog__ Body_ Cover__ Flange
    ________Height__ Location____ Pads__ Date__ Date___Parting-line
    Pump 1 .100 tall___ top/front engine_ No__ 10/60__ 9/60___ Middle
    Pump 2 .150 tall___bottom/front____Yes__ 5/63___4/63____Edge
    Pump 3 .150 tall___bottom/front ____Yes__ 8/65___6/65____Edge

    Questions:

I saw in past threads there were references to Vette Heads forum but I was unable to access. Can someone educate me in this forum?

    Thanks Jeff

    Re: 63 Fuel Pump Dates/Fonts

Hi Jeff, It doesn't appear that any of the above 3 pumps would be 100% correct for a 63. The 2nd pump is suspicious though. Wild guess is that pump #2 was rebuilt by a mass rebuilder or a bubba and the parts were mixed. But since you only showed a partial view it's hard to tell. Going by the date though and the frog pad info-to repeat none are correct.
Nice job you did on explanation of what you have.
As far as your question of what is correct for a very late 63 I can't say for sure if a frog pad pump would be correct. I doubt it from what I have heard.
Jorjorian knows a whole lot more than I do about these pumps. He is the one that taught me about the frog pads. Maybe he will chirp in. JD

      Re: 63 Fuel Pump Dates/Fonts

      John,

Here are more pics showing 1963 date codes for cover and center body. One thing interesting about all three pumps is date codes of cover and center body match. I would have thought if any went through master rebuilder then dates would be mismatched. Here are a few other trivia items on pumps:

      Cover:
AC casting number same for all 5620992, however 1960 cover has shorter ribs on inside.
Center Body: AC casting number 5620947, however all three castings has different internal ribs and features. One external item which can be detected by Judging is font type for "In"/"Out". 1960 pump has .150 raised font, 1963 pump has .125 raised font and 1965 pump has .125 recessed font. These differences are confirm by casting dates.
Top Body: AC casting number is located under vent holes where packing material resides. Unfortunately there appears to be no casting date only a casting number which is of poor quality. The only one I could make out was 1965 pump which had 5621019 in this area. There are also internal casting differences in addition to external frog pads and flange parting line. The 1965 pump had (3) ribs located under diaphram. The 1963/60 had none. Also the flange area under the cam arm is different for all three.
Cam Arm: AC part number 5621021 was stamped on 1963/60 pump and nothing was on 1965 arm.

After seeing all these differences I am convinced the 4657 pump had continual changes over the years and I'm not sure anyone can correctly say what should be specific for what year especially the top part of the pump since there appears to be no casting date.

I would love to hear from Mr. Jorjorian on this issue.

      Thanks Jeff

Jeff, "MR." Jorjorian typically waits until we bury our butts here and then he comes up with info with nice pics to show us we don't have a clue.
This should be good although might take a while. John
