    Helping e-bay members

Before e- bay started hiding members handles I new some people who were bidding on a wrong part 55 to 57 and e-mail them to keep them from buying the wrong part wasting money and had them thank me. Now no one can be warned . Just to bad and thought I would mention it.

Right Roy! E-Week or Ad Age or one of the posts I get daily announced a couple of weeks ago that eBay's partners are not too happy with them, as are the sellers (costs, etc.) Meg better get back there and save it!

I see FI stuff on ebay that is advertised incorrectly and just groan. Nothing can be done about it you say Roy? Well yes there is but good luck.
I send a note to the seller. Typically I get a reply of some sort but seldom do I see that the situation is corrected. Buyer beware big time. Now remember paypal will guarantee that you get the item but they will NOT guarantee the quality of it. So the moral is you had better know what you are buying. One of the more worthless sayings is that a picture is worth a 1000 words. That's old school for sure.

I send notes to the sellers quite often as well. Usually they are happy to get the info. But I do get some irate responses as well.

I think the lack of policing Ebay is part of what is hurting ebay. I sold a couple parts on ebay and then could not collect the money except to join Paypal. I wont be back ! Dale

Yes, ebay has been maximizind it's revenue stream significantly at the expense of small sellers over the past few years. A sale of a $10.00 item is lucky to net $7.50 after the sellers fee, listing fee, and Paypal fee

I have to say I've done vary well because when buying parts for my 55 I know what I'm looking at , and if I cant see it vary well I ask the seller to take a better pic. But I have been screwed once on a Chrysler part . I've had sellers say (but the parts book said it was correct) then how do you make them understand it's not?

                Re: Helping e-bay members

I recently saw a 62 Corvette FI car on Ebay which was advertized as "correct" by the dealer selling it. It had a 320 FI unit on it which has obvious differences from a 62 360 unit.
I emailed the seller a dealer, who insisted it was correct.
Someone bought the car. End of story.

I also recently got a call from a guy who was restoring a 62 FI car. He had recently bought a 320 unit and was trying to determine if it was correct for a 62. Again obvious differences in the 320 and 360 units.

I believe that the uninformed buyers are falling prey to the slick sellers.

To Roys point, it's to bad we can't communicate with buyers and help them out.
Although buying a $50.00 book would help a lot of people make better informed decisions.

I sell on Ebay and being honest is very important, although the "Feedback" option is pretty meaningless due to Ebays watering down of the system.

                  Re: Helping e-bay members

I quit using Ebay over two years ago after buying and selling on that site for almost five years. The changes in policies and the PayPal requirements were the last straw.

There are alot of good parts still out there, but most of the stuff an Ebay is junk. Lots of people don't know what they are selling. Most of the 'NOS' parts are late model service replacement stuff that may function but not near original in appearance or finish.

I lost patience with it.... ok rant over

That is exactly why EBAY went to using PAYPAL. Too many people were sending checks & money orders & not getting there stuff. I would not buy on there if I can't use PAYPAL. Once you send a check you have no recourse except bitch to EBAY. I have a feedback of over 600 & find it cheaper to buy & sell that anywhere else. When you figure gas, admission & food at meets or chasing parts its a lot cheaper. I agree though I do not like the hidden bidder thing.

I have just at 1000 transactions on Ebay and never had a payment problem.

I believe Ebay only accepts PayPal (which they own) so they can get another 3% of the sellers money.
In addition they calculate that fee on sale price AND shipping price.
It is also speculated that since all transactions are documented (as in Paypal) from start to finish this could be a tool for the government to step in with taxes on the sales.

I still like the good old swap meets with face to face deals and no BS.

If thy start doing that I will stop using them. I have had only 2 problems & both were with people that would ony except checks. Swap meets are fun but it's much more convenient to look online & have stuff show up at your door with no lugging around & long drives.

Until you buy a set of trim rings with the 4 clips in the picture and you recieve the ones with the clips all the way around. You go back to him and he is no longer a member according to Ebay. This happened a long time ago when ebay was still faily new. But I have not forgot. Dale

Thankfully I need nothing more for my 55 but using e-bay I found so many NEW original parts . Now I look and buy new original parts as extra to keep or trade. Some day when people realize what is original and not repro or a GM replacement service part I might make some money so I can go to eastern NCRS meets from Ca.
Most great meets are back east ,here in the west sucks.

Ken's right, that PayPal can be a very positive situation for buyers. There's really nothing that can go wrong,...for the buyer.
But, the problem is, it's is a huge financial drag, for the seller.
I disagree that is exactly why eBay went to using PayPal (too many people sending checks & money orders & not getting their stuff).
eBay bought PayPal outright in 2002 for 1.5 billion dollars. They didn't do it to "help their buyers", they did it to make money. Lots, and lots of money. Nothing wrong with that, as that's capitalism at it's finest.
For the quarter of January1 to March 31st, 2008 (before eBay implemented the no checks and money order policy), PayPal net revenue was 582 million dollars, with 14.42 billion dollars in transacations.
Forcing PayPal fees on all sellers, is the gift that keeps giving, and giving for eBay.
But, since Meg Whitman left, eBay still keeps declining, and losing sellers. The eBay closing stock price Friday, was $11.93.
When check and money order payments were permitted, a buyer could decide for themselves, IF, they wished to do business with the seller. But sellers now have no choice in the matter. It's either pay PayPal fees that average 5%, or, have their auctions cancelled.
Now, that same buyer has fewer established sellers. I'm one of many sellers who left eBay last November, when it went "paperless payments". Ridge
