Wonder how many turbo 400 69 L88's were sold with a 3:36 rear end?
Pictures also appear to me to show the 68 style AIR pump.

Hi Jim,Actually that is the correct AIR pump for 69L88s and ZL1s. They are not the same as the other 69s.

              Hello Jim,
Chevrolet built (15) 1969 Corvettes with M-40 turbo 400 transmissions.
I know of (7) with the 3.36 rear axle ratio.
I know of (1) with the 3.08 rear axle ratio.
I do not know how the others were built with the rear axle ratio.
              Regards,
              Drew Papsun

And I just was at the 40th anniversary of the '69 Winternationals. They got it done despite the rain.

Check the July 1969 Car Life; Zora's ZL-1 hardtop, white/black, Americans, flares, side mounts, Firestone racing and the proto. LT-1 in a '69. The magazine tested all engines, transmissions, body types, etc. Very comprehensive!

How many of the '69 L-88/TH400 are MIA??

Have the TH400 L-88s from the rental company in St. Louis all been accounted for?

                        Anyone?

Pete,I remember reading about that too. A rental car company in St Louis ordered 5 69 L88 Corvettes for their fleet. I am guessing that their thought process was since it was rated at 430hp which was less than the L71 and was listed as heavy duty it would be more realiable than an L71. I have never heard if the cars came with M22s or M40s. As the story goes the cars never made it very far due to overheating and were abandoned. I have never seen a 69 L88 in person that was bought new at the rental company but would love to know if this really occurred of if its just folklore.

                            Re: L88 !!!

About 20 years ago, I spoke to a vice president of a very large automobile leasing (rental) company in St. Louis that routinely purchased Corvettes for its current and potential customers. They would lease the Corvettes directly to the customers as the dealerships were in the business to sell and service the cars, and not to lease them.

This company is close to 50 years old now. The vice president told me that he was not sure if they kept the records of their leases and their cars much after the 7 year IRS requirement. I asked him about these Corvettes, but it had been so many years ago, that he did not have any specific memories. He remembered leasing many Corvettes over the years, but one or two did not stand out more than the rest. It was not uncommon for a customer to be unhappy with his leased car. If dissatisfied, he would bring it back and get a different model. It was just business.

I've been looking for those leased Corvettes since 1978. They were M40s.

If they haven't surfaced yet, they are still in garages somewhere. I'll recognize the name of the original leasing company when the L88s surface with their paperwork. That should clear up the folklore.

This was a test "mule" that had at least a 460 + cubic inch engine and a 4:56 rear end. It was scrapped.
