1972 Tie rod sleeves and clamps

The Judging manual says the the tie rods sleeves and clamps are a natural finish after the manufacturing process of stamped/rolled steel. I would think this process would result in the pieces having a dull steel/light gray color not a black painted appearance.

Does someone know what is correct and why?

Read the manual more closely and you will find a sentence that tells you the steering linkage was coated with a black thick coating at the manufacturing plant.

Thanks Terry. Can you please be more specific, i.e. where in the manual (70 - 72 4th ed.) I can find this sentence.

Thanks again. You have always been most helpful in my restoration of my car.

Well Jerome I couldn't find it in the manual either. I guess I am so used to seeing it on this board I assumed it was in the manual.

From a strictly judging position; what should I do leave the tie rod sleeves and clamps natural as described in the 1st message of this thread or spray paint them black? If black, any thought on the sheen? gloss, semi gloss, semi flat or just flat.

Thoughts of others would also be appreciated.

If the Tech manual says natural finish on the tie rod sleeves, I would leave them natural. I have a '71 that I have had since '72 and the sleeves were natural when I bought it.

My 72 had black painted ones.
                Joe Lucia told me so.

Actually so much paint has worn off that I thought they were natural, but he is correct - there is black paint on them. It's visible in the pics if you look, and I did actually note it last week when I saw the car.
