    1971 transmission wire

Frist time under my 71 and there is a wire plugged into the bottom of the 4 speed transmission near the shift lever. What is this?
    Thanks

    TCS wire.
The switch on your transmission let the TCS system know when you're in - or out of - certain gears.

What's TCS and what does it do?

TCS controls vacuum advance to your distributor via that funny solenoid on the left front of your carb + a few other switches on your car. Technically in 71 it was called CEC (same idea, different name).

Check the Archives for a wealth of info on the particulars.

The car is a LT-1 with the wrong carb (Holley3810) and solenoid. Should the wire be disconnected.

If you don't have the solenoid on the intake ( it will have a plug and 2 vac. ports on it ) then it doesn't matter if it's plugged in.

              Re: 1971 transmission wire

No discrete solenoid on the intake manifold was used in 1971. That's one of the little differences Pat mentioned between the TCS (transmission controlled spark) of '70 and '72-74 versus the one year only CEC (combined emission control) system of 1971. In '71, the vac switching to the distributor and the curb idle switching at the carb was performed by a single CEC solenoid mounted on the carb...
