Inner Tie Rod End Clamp Blots

Ive read the Judging Manual, and looked at the assembly manual. Which way is the correct way for the clamp bolts to be facing. Maybe Im reading it wrong but I see two different directions there. I changed them once already, just trying to do it only once more if I can. This is for a 1969 427.

Also what is the correct finish for the upper part of the Idler arm that bolts to the frame? Its a different metal than the lower part, should it be finished differently?

    Thanks, Ned

Ned do you have an assembly manual if you do there is a great illustration on how to locate the clamps. If not let us know and we will help you get them right.
The idler arm is natural finish on all the metal parts. Paul 18046

Ned, I Have A 72, The Assy. Manuel Shows The Tie Rod Bolt Head Facing The Top And Nut To The Bottom, The Clamp Opening Faces The Lower A-arm. I Would Think They Would Be The Same.

Paul I did look in the assembly manual and also saw the two "section" views of the tie rod ends. I put them in that way but then read in the Judging Guide and it says the opposite?? Unless Im reading something wrong. The Third Edition Judging Manual, Page 80, Steering Linkage, Inner tie rod end bolts, "the threads should face forward"

Ned What they are saying is that the bolts should not be in perfect alignment. The outer tie rod clamp should be bolt vertical and clamp horizontal pointing aft or 45 deg up or down from that point. The inner tie rod clamp should be bolt pointing Fwd clamp vertical or 45 deg to the aft only. The reason for this it to prevent interference with any of the other components in the front end. Hope this helps the biggest thing is the clamps and bolts should not be aligned to one an other and should not interfere with any other part during the steering of the vehicle. The reason they give the 45 deg angles is to align the clamps to the adjustment rod to the tie rod that's why there are those slots in the tubes the clamps compress the tubes. . Paul 18046
