Daily Driver from 69-74. Drove the 58 283/270 Dual Quad. thru college. Up and down Mnt roads. Later when the car was frame offed in the 80's. Learned the back 1/3 frame was cut out and replaced. Rotted out.Pics shows up on stands in 1971 to rebuild the 4-speed. Wrecked it on the "Berlin Turnpike" racing a 69 Roadrunner. Missed shift blew 3rd. More than lost the race.

Here are a couple of photos taken by the original owner (Now a Chevrolet Dealer) of my 70. Side pipe installation was taken when the car is 2 days old. Other photo is soon after. Car is from New York. Just to add a couple of interesting vintage photos to the others already posted.

Interesting side pipes mufflers. They look like the chambered exhaust for Camaro and Chevelle. Were those from a Dealer?

1970's there was a time Corvettes were good for towing parts to your local swap meet because they were just used cars. I paid big money back then for my 60 $300.00

In the early seventies, as my daily driver, I had a 66 300HP with 4 speed & 308 posi . As I recall, with snow tires, it was excellant in snow up to 6 inches.

              Jamie:

The pipes used for side exhaust were chambered. At least the original ones were.

                Tom,
Sorry, I've seem hundreds of original '69 sidepipes and never seen a chambered set. They usually have the straight cans that are stacked with a pinch in the middle.

                  Jamie,
That photo was taken in July of 1970. One can only concude they were GM service 1969 side pipes. All the original GM side pipes I have ever seen were chambered like the photo.

Looks to me like C3 covers with C2 chambers. This was quite common as an add on. The chambers sounded nicer/louder which most people liked. Original factory installed were as so have described as I recall.

Okay Wayne. Now that makes sense!
                      I had on my C3 lenses, didn't think about C2 pipes on a C3.
                      Still Interesting!
                      Thanks!

No way back then could I afford to own a car that sat in the garage all winter.

I drove my 70LT-1 in the winters of 72 & 73 as it was the only car I could afford. Had studded snow tires on the back as they were legal in WI at the time. It was really a good winter car with the hardtop and great heater. Well balanced handling in the snow. With the studs I could go through a lot and never get stuck. You had to be careful with the studs on dry roads when applying the power as you could spin the tires even at speed.

                          Jamie,

                          I agree with your statement:

They usually have the straight cans that are stacked with a pinch in the middle.anks!
I just didn't word it correctly. I never saw a "factory built" C3 sidepipe car with the C2 style chambered pipes.

The original side exhaust that was installed in St Louis on the 1969 I took delivery of brand new did NOT have chambered side exhaust on it. There was a hour-glass shaped muffler under the side covers. Maybe that car was rarer than I thought. I guess I should have bought it back after the crash.

You are right Jamie ! I should have taken my C2 goggles off too ! I even have a set of 69 pipes on my 73 and they are the stacked can design you spoke of. Duh !!

JAN/FEB 1970 Corvette News Mag. Has a article about the 70 LT-1 & a picture of it off the road in a ditch in the snow. It also mentioned that PS would be a option soon.
