    Help with 67 SB Alternator

I removed all the paint from the housing and it looks pretty good for a 41m year old part. The pulley (and bolts) is also painted (black). I believer the pulley / bolts should be natural. Can anyone confirm?

Also I want to get clarification relative to the mounting bolts and washers:
    • no lock washer (if I read the JM correctly this one should be engine color?)

    Any help is appreciated.

Nut & wavy lock washer are clear zinc plated (metal color) that secure alternator pulley.
Natural or zinc on short and long lower bolts.
The bolt will not be orange since the lower alternator brace was left hanging off the water pump mounting bolt prior to painting engine. So lower brace should have substantial orange over the black finish. In 67 the SB exhaust manifolds were not installed prior to painting engine. So short bolt is installed after exhaust manifolds were installed.
Upper bolt is natural or zinc, but I tend to think originals were zinc and discolored over the years and look natural based on the threads when you remove them.

There are no bolts on an alternator pulley. However, if you mean the NUT, it was zinc plated.

As far as the pulley goes, it depends which pulley you have and that depends upon a lot of other factors like engine, power steering or not, air conditioning or not.

However, if you have an application that uses a pulley WITH AN INTEGRAL FAN, those were usually phosphate finished. Some may have been painted semi-gloss black, though, as I think that was an alternative finish allowed.

If you have any other type of pulley with separate fan, then the pulley was zinc plated.

Thanks Joe, I should have provided more specifics. My 67 has original base 327/300, no AC, no power breaks or steering. The alternator is original but the housing was painted silver and the pulley / nuts may have also been painted black. I restored the housing and want to do the same for the pulley / nuts but am not sure what the finish should be. The fan is black and I believe that is correct.

Do you know if any of the bracket bolts s/b engine color?

          Thanks again.

Your application originally used the GM #3909815 pulley/fan assembly or, possibly if it's an early car the GM #3843342. These are pulley and fan integral assemblies. All that I have seen have been black phosphate-finished. Some may have been painted, though, as I previously mentioned. The nut was zinc plated.

The alternator support bracket for your application was painted engine color.
