57 Transmission Options

    57 Transmission Options

    I need a 3 spd for my 57. I have 3 options, and would like some input.
    Option #1. Buy a 57 3 spd at a cost of $4,500.

    Option #2. Buy a 59 Vette tailshaft, and have it installed onto a 57 Belair 3 spd. Total cost would by $250.

    Option #3. Buy a complete 60 Vette 3 spd for $450.

    Question #1: Will the 57 Belair maincase/59 Vette tailshaft combo work OK as far as the crossmember mount and driveshaft length?

    Question #2: Will the 60 Vette 3 speed work in my 57 with no mods?

    Mike, is your goal to restore the car to as factory assembled configuration or use as a driver? If you want a driver and not concerned with judging, etc. I would install a 4 speed, if factory configuration and the dates are correct then $4,500.

    I have my original date '57 3 speed plus a '61 4 speed. One is for originality and one is for fun.

    Mike-I just remembered a guy I know bought a rebuilt '57 Corvette 3 speed in the 90-95 timeframe and he told me at the time he paid $3,500 with original linkage and rechromed shifter.

      Mike, I would buy the 60 trans and look for a correct 57 or parts to build one and sell the 60 when you do . NO POINTS on trans dates but you sleep better when you've got 'em

          4500 frogskins for a dated 57 3 speeds sounds like the wall street brokers are now selling trannys. c-1 3 speed corvettes trannys at carlisle are typically offered for less than 500 bucks. keep in mind the c-1 vette 3 speeds were close ratio geared and few of the 55-57 chevy pass cars were close ratio'd, not that the wide ratio won't work in your vette.mike
