Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
the ZO6 Gulf engines appeared like any other 63 360 hp engine before Grady Davis' boys took delivery. you might contact rich mason who restored one of the grady davis ZO6's about 5-10 years ago. good luck,mike- Top

Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
Jerry, As mentioned the engines were stock. Maybe Clem knows different though. I only live 30 miles from the old Gulf Research. The 2nd owner was Dr. Donald Blatchley. Doc had the race car serviced on the time clock at Grabiak Chevrolet. The engine compartment was rather stock. The drive cable assembly from the FI unit to the Distributor was my idea in the old days. I cut off the the flexible part of the outer cable housing. Just used the short piece that was held onto the distributor via a knurled nut. Timmy and I did that after JD here got hollered at by the good MD as the damn drive cable flew out of the FI or distributor at a race at Connellsville, PA airport. After that race is when we put the short hunk of the housing on. You had to do that as it takes forever to put a drive cable and housing on a 63. But as far as plumbing goes I am not sure what you mean. Under the hood it was pretty much stock. When I saw the car in the early 90's after Rich Mason restored it I thought the same thing. But the rest of the car had it's share of alterations. Especially the interior. Doc was a little guy and Tim Grabiak (his chief mechanic) had blocks of wood on the brake and clutch pedal for Docs little legs. The side exhaust was the pits. Real crude in the old days. We all got burned from them. Clem still has the scar to prove it.
Sorry for rambling. JD- Top

Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
Jerry--
Gulf warmed over the engines internally as much as they could within the A-production limitations. Externally there was almost nothing that they did. My 62 Gulf car had SW gauges rather than the stock ones in the cluster, so they used a different sending unit under the hood, for example. They modified the hood with louvers so that there was greater airflow through the engine compartment, but no real external motor mod on that. They just weren't allowed to do much.
The reason that both Thompson and Yenko drove in 61 and won B production is because they were protested and torn down after one of the races and the flywheel had been shaved--Yenko was then suspended for the rest of the year and Grady went out and got Dick Thompson to drive and finish off the year.

Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
I have "heard" from some that you must be certain to remove the same amount directly across from another drilled hole AND be equidistant around the circumference or bad things happen.Yuh have to balance it.

Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
you need to do the math, circumference of the flywheel vs diameter of the holes you want to drill to see how may you can drill to make things come out even so there is no balance problem. the holes need to be drilled using a index head and a milling machine- Top

Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
Jerry,
A little off topic, but I own Grady Davis' 64 Coupe, the motor on my car is a 365 modified internally with JE Forgtrue Pistons and Carillo Rods, bore size is standard, also they degreed the Harmonic Balancer and removed the Choke Blades from the Factory Holley, Yenko/Gulf also fitted a Roll Bar and Racing Harnesses, all for street use !

Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
the way to lighten the flywheel so it can not be seen is to remove the ring gear and drill radially into the flywheel removing weight from the outside diameter and then reinstall the ring gear. this way the only way to tell if the wheel was lighter was to remove it and weight it. i told the yenko after that happened "i thought you guys smarter than that"

Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
SCCA production class rules didn't allow much mechanical alteration in 1963. The engines were very close to OE production as was the body with the exception of removing bumpers and body trim. Open exhaust was allowed, but the production manifolds had to be in place. No "metal removal from the heads" was allowed, but there was some opportunity for "blueprinting". FIA races like Sebring allowed more in the way of modifications as long as Chevrolet "homologated" the changes.
On thing they probably did was replace the PCV system with open vents and a catch can.

Re: looking for photo Gulf Z06 engine
What I read was in 61 they used an alumnium flywheel which was legal in FIA Sebring race. When protested at a SCCA race the aluminum unit appeared, and the crew admitted they screwed up and never changed it.
