    Scratches In Glass?

Have some scratches in my windows. Have read lots of ways people try to remove scratches from toothpaste to bar keepers friend, to polishing compounds. What's the best way that doesn't distort the glass, break the glass, or make it worse. Don't want to replace dated glass with Astro ventilation it.

I have used jeweler's rouge to take out fine scratches but it takes alot of time and patience. If the scratch can be felt with your fingernail, it is probably to deep to remove.

Eastwood sells a kit that I've used to remove surface scratches from windshields with good results. As DOn said, though, if your fingernail catches on the scatch, it's probably too deep.

I took a lot of scratches out of the side windows of my 1970. The fingernail test is an old mechanics tale. It all depends on how much time and effort you want to expend, and what your definition of distortion is. If you want absolutely NO distortion -- replace the glass. You can not remove the scratches without some distortion. How obvious it will be, again, depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it and how deep the scratches are.

I have used the jewelers rouge and the kit and been very satisfied with the results. Just for the heck of it next time I am going to go to a good glass shop and see what they have.

I just saw a program "How it is Made" on the Science Channel. They showed how mirrors are made. They polish the glass with cerium oxide (in the kit from Eastwood and others), and the grind a bevel on some of the mirrors and polish it with the same material. They use powerful machines and do the job in a lot less time than we could.

I agree with Terry and Stephen. I wore out two new 3/8" drills polishing vette glass. Just don't get it hot. Give it a try.

It is important to keep to the speed recommended by the source of your abrasive and buffing pad. I found an old (but still plastic -- so it is reasonably light weight) two-speed Craftsman sander/buffer at a local garage sale. One of the speeds was exactly what was recommended. It has worked well for me -- and was inexpensive. I did have to have the buffer arbor modified by one of my fellow Chapter members who worked in a machine shop -- Chapters are an excellent resource.

Cover the car well, The spin-off from the buffer will be hard to clean up otherwise.

Auto glass companis use a liqid plastic to fill star cracks i windshields when it hardens they polish it so that you cannot see it. Ask one of them about it.

Yes. A number of auto suppliers offer a plastic scratch remover that works much the same as on glass. Eastwood has, or used to have it. I believe Ecklers, CC or Paragon also has it, can't remember which.
