    1956 Oil Pan

What characteristics am I looking for in a 56 oil pan? I really need to see a picture if someone is willing to post one. I have heard that they are tough to come by and definitely not the same as a passenger car...no indents in the bottom following up the slope in front main step and an overall 3 stepped pan. True or false? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks, guys,
    Mark

    Mark;

If you go to the post back in November (the link below), there were a huge number of responses and comments along with a great amount of photos. Here is the link to it. It was titled "correct 58 oil pan" but talked about most of the C1 pans

      Hi Mark,

Are you working on an early 56 or a later car? There were two pans used in 1956. If you are working on an early car with two bolt exhaust manifolds I can show you the correct pan. I do not have one handy for the later cars. I need one myself.

JEEEEEEEEEEEZ, what a bunch of confusion that link provided!!!!!!!!!
I'll just stick with the chrome plated, long sump, 65 FI pan that's on my 56. Along with the 69 Z28 windage tray, it works great!

          Re: 1956 Oil Pan

My car is a very late car...September 7th. Shows what I know. I thought the early and late oil pans were the same in 56. Anyone know why or how they were different? And by the way, I agree that the link to the 58 oil pan discussion was confusing. All I saw was a group of guys arguing (and not coming to concensus) and am still not sure which is which and don't have a picture to look at to determine what is correct for a 56 late car.

When I was working on my 66 big block, I saw these discussions with the C1 guys about their oil pans and was happy I wasn't involved in it. Now here I am right in the middle and needing info! Dangit!

            Hi Mark
The main difference between the 56 early and later oil pan is that early cars had the dip stick on the passenger side and after that it changed to the driver side.

Gary Chesnut tried his best to show people what the 57-58 (ORIGINAL) oil pan looked like even showing the GM print ,I too give up trying any more.

I don't think the 56 pan was discussed at all really. It was about 57-60 for the most part.

Early first design 56 oil pan and manifolds ,later 56 manifolds engine and 57 second design had oil pan same as 58 oil pan ( only inside may be different). Now you can decide weather that's right or wrong. It' just my opinion

There is what appears to me to be a 56/57 oil pan on ebay right now based on that past thread and Roy's input:

He sent me a couple pics, but I need a 58/59 pan.

                      Ian,

That pan looks exactly like the 56-57 pan. Very close to a 56-5? truck pan only without the extra ribs in the side. Great pictures. Thanks.
