    Which Fuel Pump

    Hi Guys,

I'm rebuilding a 61 315 HP FI 283 car. The car when I got it was Carburated with the original FI unit in the trunk. I am returning it to the FI unit. I need to get a new fuel Pump. In looking for one I see that there appear to be two configurations of the same Fuel Pump. As you face the Pump as if you were looking at it attached to the block one appears to have the fuel lines coming from the left side the other the right. I have a feeling the dirfference is between the FI and Carburated engines. Which one do I need? Are there any NCRS correct AC Delco units out there? I find AC Delco units but they do not have the critical embossed AC on the top and bottom (bowl) of the units.

    Thanks,
    Jack Alexander (35730)

Jack - What you need is a "4656" that is die-stamped generally into the upper portion of engine block mounting flange facing forward and has a casting parting line along the exterior surface of the flange and is not ground down as maybe the case in some re-stamped pumps, and as you previously stated "AC" are cast into the top & bottom housings. I have a listing of parts that I need and ebay sends me an email when those parts become available. A better source is our NCRS Driveline. Be patient you will find one shortly.

Yep, as Bill said the fuel pump was an AC 5594656. These were stamped on the mounting flange with '4656 to denote the factory original configuration.

BUT, there were several pumps that used the same basic components (4657, 4432, 4665, and 6559) with the difference being how the main body was 'clocked' prior to attachment to the pump's upper lid.

When pumps failed and went down reverse assy lines for aftermarket rebuild, they were disassembled cleaned and re-assembled as required to make a particular configuration of the pump.

So, it's pretty common to find a rebuilt, used, original pump with the '4656 emboss on it, yet assembled in a different clocking position to create one of the other pump configurations. The conversion is child's play. You removed the body to lid screws, rotate the body to get the correct fuel line in/out orientation and re-attach the screws.

        Re: Which Fuel Pump

I bought a 4656 original rebuilt from Corvette Central last month after watching EBAY for a few months.

Overall, I am happy with it except the casting surfaces have a slight green tint. Anyone know what caused that ?

There was no difference between the FI pump and the carbureted pump. Information from previous posts is correct.

              Hi Guys,

As usual you are all right on. I took my old Pump and was able with little effort able to "clock" it to almost any configuration. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
