    63 interior paint

I have searched the archives and went to a couple of different web sites for paint colors but have found nothing that helps or looks like mine, for a 63 saddle interior. I went to a Chevy dealership today and they can't sell paint and did not want to help much. He suggested that I should take a large interior part to an auto parts store and they can match very close.

    Is there a better way?

    Hi Greg,

If you find the formula keep me in the loop I'm going to need it next winter as well as I'm planning doing my Daytona/Saddle SWC body in that period...

    regards,

I am looking into the paint as well for my 63 coup. AL Knoch sells a paint thatch matches the vinyl, but is not a match for the trim and upper steering column. Im hoping that the shop that paints my body can find a good match for the outside and inside and outside saddle. My body should be painted in early June.

        Try Tower Paint:

I used the saddle stain from Corvette America in spray cans on my 63. It takes alot of light coats to get even coverage.

Carl, so there are two different shades on your interior? I am repainting it all and sure don't want to have to redo it?

Bob you used the dye? I have purchase a quart of this to dye for my dash pads and was thinking the same thing, since it is paint. Do you have any photos?

                Check out Harry's post first
Do some more searching on the different paint shades for the interior. Not sure if 63 had different shades, but know 67 did and think 63 has some of the same issues especially in the tan color. (Note, not a 63 expert - many others on here are)

I don't have a lot of detail pictures of my car at the office. But I attached a few of the interior. I'm certain I have some good photos of the repaint of my steering column at home. Get me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Just got an email from Corvette America and they said that I could use the dye that I purchased for my dash pads for all interior work?

                    Thanks

Greg, If your going to judge it you will need to read the JG for the finishes. There are several.

                        Greg,

I am probably going to throw you a curve ball. There were two different saddle tan colors used on 63 Coupes.

                        Medium Saddle DL 22298

                        Medium Saddle DL 22299

The 22299 color was used on the halo panel and the rear window garnish only.

Here comes the curve ball!!!! The Ditzler DL numbers above are NOT for acrylic lacquer. They for for Nitro Cellulose Lacquer.

My paint was mixed by Color-ite Classic Finishes, Carrrington Road, Rt. 69 Bethany Conn. 06525

Sorry I don't have the number but they did advertise in Hemmings.

                        Good Luck,

                        JR

I painted the lower windshild trim, the steering column, the radio side panels, the front carpet retainers, the rear storage compartment, the speaker grill and the rear quarter trim panels.
I thought the results were pretty good. The material is actually stain and not paint so it is watery and must go on with several light coats. If you spray it heavy it will run. It does dry very fast and I was able to touch up small defects.

                            Re: 63 interior paint

I went through the JM and found; window trim, defroster outlet trim, radio speaker grill, side trim panels, steering column and storage compartment "low gloss" and Dash "satin finish." Not sure what the difference is between satin and low gloss?

I went to a paint shop and they had an old Dupont paint book and they showed two interior colors also but they both referenced the exact same paint chip, #'s 95355 & 95562. The paint guy said they could be different sheens (satin and low gloss maybe) but said it did not matter because his computer did not show those numbers anymore. We also got to looking at the previous page and it showed "1963 exterior (including certain interior colors)" (so maybe even a third option).

Thanks for the input to date. Not done with this yet.

                              Greg,

The Dupont numbers are for 2 Medium Saddle colors

                              95355 is a metallic saddle

95243 is a non metallic saddle used on the rear window garnish and halo panel

                              The Dupont exterior is 4392-L

Another interesting side note is that Larry Shinoda selected this paint color himself (exterior). At least that is what he told me at a Florida meet in 1993.
My paint guy had mixed the paint from paint under the pillar w/s on my 63. Larry complimented my paint guy for using enough green???????

You are going to have to find a paint guy that is willing to work with you if you plan on your 63 being even close to original.

All this information that I am giving you is listed in the 53 thru 72 Corvette Specifications Guide. That was the special 15th Anniversary Edition of the Corvette Restorer Magazine. Volume Sixteen, Number One, Summer 1989.
It was compiled by John Amgwert the NCRS Publications Editor during that time. Reprints of this Guide may be available from the Cincinnati Office.
