The fun never ends. I am in the process of converting my dry sump road race 327 to a wet sump motor. I have a melling 155 HV. Have any of you old racers every expirienced a casting failure of the pump. melling warns that when used with solid motor mounts the casting may fail. I don't want to go back and change this out but I will. I'm suspicious that Melling may be trying to sell me the more expensive version of the same pump. Have any of you old racers ever seen a casting failure on this OEM type pump?? Jerry

Re: wet sump oil pump casting failure
Jerry, only failures that I have seen was from debris, needle bearings from the rockers in both cases, in the pump. I could maybe visualize a harmonic vibration that might do the damage, but that would be a far streachDick Whittington- Top

google: "melling oil pump failure" You'll get a bazzillion hits. On one of the pages I found this:
Here's a link to a page with a couple of pictures that show the difference between the select and regular pumps:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...hlight=melling

Re: wet sump oil pump casting failure
Jerry, I just installed a M155 oil pump in my race car. I read the warning that came with the oil pump concerning the potential failure with solid motor mounts. I compared the new pump with several other pumps that I have and it looks like it was redesigned with less mass to the casting.

Re: wet sump oil pump casting failure
make sure you radius grind the area where they machine for the bolt so you have no sharp corners which cause stress risers. you can fab a metal brace from the pickup screen to a main bearing cap bolt or windage tray stud.Last edited by Clem Z.; March 3, 2009, 12:11 AM.- Top
