    Judging question??

I've never had a car judged at a NCRS meet but wanted to try to do so this year. Possible at the Regional level. I did take one to Bloomington back in 2004 and ended up with a bronze which I thought for the first time out was okay. I finished restoring my 67 SB last year and tried following the JG as best I could except for a couple areas. I decided to keep the sidepipes and saddle convertible top that were not original to the car. It is maroon with saddle interior and we really like the look of the saddle top (I know only white and black were offered from the factory). Also with side exhausts, I don't know if I could get used to under car exhaust. My question is how big a hit am I going to take by not changing the top and sidepipes back to original? Would it make it impossible to get a top flight with the top and sidepipes? I believe the rest of the car will judge pretty well. Thanks for any input. Shooter

    Hey Shooter !

Regardless of the points hit for the top and side exhaust, you already know these areas are incorrect and you are OK with both issues. Take it out and get it judged. If those are the only areas you you get deductions in, you'll know your car is good to go !! Take it out and get it judged and have a little fun !!! The experienced judges here will be able to make you aware of the total point deduction for the exhaust and top variation.

Without counting the points, you would have to have a pretty straight up car to overcome the loss of rocker panels, mufflers, bezels, tips, top, etc. Maybe Nick Culkowski or Mike Murray will chime in with the point total.

On the added side exhaust, expect a full deduction (originality and condition points) for dealer/owner inspired option addition. Flight Scorce sheets are available for download at this web site and you can see the points involved.

Will it prevent you from achieving Top Flight? No, but it will make things harder...

If your car was restored to drive/enjoy, then why not put NCRS rules to work for you? Unlike NCCB/Bloomington, we encourage owner to drive/use their cars and we give mileage driven bonus points.

The program is defined in the NCRS Judging Reference Manual which is also a good item to have, read and understand BEFORE you show up for Flight Judging. It defines the rules for owners and judges alike. Bottom line, there should be no surprises when you have your car judged! So, get ready to enjoy the process...

          Thanks Tom,
I went down to the Nationals in St Charles last year for my first ever NCRS meet and was able to be an observing judge. It was an awesome experience and whatever happens point wise with the 67 I'm going to enjoy it. The members here on the forum were GREAT when I was restoring the car. If it wasn't for the NCRS forum I'd be still be sitting in the middle of the garage talking to myself.

Hi Jack, Thank you for the advice. I did restore the car to drive and we really do enjoy it. Also we plan on driving it where ever we get it judged. I've mentioned before on the forum if we'd known Corvette people were this friendly we wouldn't have waited until we were retired before we got into them. All the judges and NCRS members I met last year at St. Charles were very helpful with whatever questions I had. I did get a chance to put a face to some of the members here on the forum. I'll have to check out the Judging Reference Manual to see where I'm at. Take care, Shooter

                Shooter,

You have a great attitude. Jack's answer is on the mark.

Any attempt to fairly score a car on a discussion board may prove to be erroneous.

Test judge/score your car prior to an event.

Download the sheets and judge it on your own or with friends.

                Try a local chapter event.

Don't forget to study the CJRM pg ii Section 3.

Driven mileage points are your friend.

Understand full or major deductions and how to balance them.

                Operations scoring is critical.

                The outcome may surprise you!

Enter & drive your car to an event, learn what you can, and go forward from there.

Nick's advice is right on, especially the part about operations. An ops failure is 25 points. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen folks argue about 1 or 2 points on an "appearance" deviation and blow away two or more 25 pointers on the operations section. Maximize the good points of your car and enjoy it!

                    Nick,
Thank you for the great pointers. Being older (wiser?? ummm questionable) I think we learn to enjoy the path traveled more than the end results. I hope to use the judging process as a way to learn more about this great hobby we have. Getting into it at a later stage in our lives I have some catching up to do. (Comparing my 1 National to the 9 twelve year old Paul, #50,000, has attended). Even though it's tough sometimes for us older dogs to learn new tricks I'm going to try and keep my mind from wondering.
                    Take care,
                    Shooter

                      Thanks Bill,
I do have the OPS manual and thankfully most if not all operations are working or will need little adjustment.

                        Harry,
You are getting some good advice here. Once you have the scoring sheets and manuals you can do alot of prejudging on your own. If possible try to get a few local NCRS members to help out.
Regarding Ops, go through the Ops judging sheet again when you get to the judging event. You wouldn't believe how many owners say "it was working before I left for the event". You don't want to lose points in this area. Don't forget the easiest 10 points - fire extinguster, NCRS decal and battery cut off switch.

Thanks, I have the fire extinguisher and decal just need to install the cut off switch. I have the one now that you unscrew and separate the end over the post from the cable but I'm going to get one with the switch.

PS That happened to me at Bloomington with my wipers. They were working fine until I drove the car into the judging field. I think the car just got nervous.
