    70 corvette TCS temp sender

Is the unit in the rh head the same as the unit in the lh head? If not does it have a separate pn? 70 -L46.

I have had no luck in two years finding an original temp sending unit. Which one of the repros works best and is closest to the original?

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Bill:
If the temp sending unit location is the same in '70 as '69 it is in the left hand cylinder head. Does yours have a "pin" type connector or is it a "spade" (flat) connector? Both are seen on ebay very often NOS. The pin type used in '69 can get quite expensive. The spade connector is much easier to find. Also Lectric Limited has a reproduction of both types. There have been many threads in the past on their accuracy so check the archives.

I'm not a C3 guy, but it's my understanding that the sender in the LH head is a thermistor unit, for the temp gauge, and the one in the RH head is a 3-way switch for the TCS solenoid (closed with a cold engine to provide manifold vacuum to the distributor, open in the normal operating temp range so the transmission controls the distributor vacuum, and closed if the engine is overheating to again provide manifold vacuum to the distributor). Completely different sending units.

You get a A+ in this, John! Thanks for the reply...it saved me from repeating the distinction between the temp sender and temp switch on early Shark cars...

          Bill,

As stated, they are different. You should have a green wired plug dangling somewhere near your heater hoses at the firewall. L&L electric should have both the switch and the plug harness if it was burned by the manifold as usually happens. See link..Ken

I see the spade type all the time. Mine has the pin type and I have seen the repros. Do not recall ever seeing an NOS sender with pin type on ebay. I could have missed it.

I did go to the Lectric Limited website. I was just unsure of what exactly was in the rh head. I clearly have the green wire off my engine harness.

Just to put a plug in for Lectric Limited. I ordered an engine harness from them. I received it but there appeared to be a problem(s) with it. I sent it back along with my original and they made the corrections free of charge. I say free because I removed the 90 degree ring terminal from the one starter wire on my harness since all they had was a 90 degree open terminal. They soldered on my original terminal, matched my TCS pigtail (single wire) versus the later 2 wire set up. and corrected the one minor fabrication error they made.

            Thanks as always!!

Dave you are correct. If I follow all the postings correctly they do not mention that the temperature unit in the passenger head has two spades for connection of a wire that supplies information for the operation of the TCS unit.
I also remember my 63 SS Impala, I thought it was neat that the green cold indicator would illuminate when I started the car. Never had the hot activate.
