    electrical test w/o cluster installed

Is there a safe way to power the fuse box while the cluster is removed? I would like to test some things while I have the dash all torn out.

If you have the battery connected, the fusebox is "hot". The ignition switch and grounds however are not connected if the cluster is removed. You need to provide more information as to what EXACTLY you are trying to test, including the specific year.

It is a 63 and I have the Negative pulled from the battery while I pulled the cluster, clock and radio out. I want to check the wiper motor and thought it would be a good time to check all the light bulbs prior to putting it back in.

You can reconnect the ground at the battery, and will have power to the fuseblock, but the bulbs are grounded thru the metal in the cluster, (Black wire that connects at the top of the cluster) so the easiest way to check them would likley be to use a setup off the car with a 12V power supply rather than try to fire them up with the cluster out. The issue of some of them requiring a switch from the cluster to activate would also be an issue.

          Greg -

The wiper motor operates by grounding the field windings THROUGH THE SWITCH HOUSING, which grounds through the cluster housing and the cluster ground wire; you'll need to ground the switch housing to check it out.

Your copy of the 1963 Corvette Service Manual provides checking proceedures for the WSW motor and pump (both on-car and on-bench). Consult section 12-23...

Sounds like the bench test out of car would be the safest way. Thank you all for the information.

So many questions when one gets started on these projects.
