As far as I can tell, there is no specific speedometer cable lubricant currently available under a GM part number. I won't rule out completely that such a product might exist, but if it does I can find no record of it.

Joe, In that case, what do you recommend? I've read the archives and based on that I know I don't want to try a graphite type.

There are some commercial, non-graphite type speedometer lubes out there. However, I like GM #12377985 all-purpose chassis lube. It's the one lubricant you can use for just about every purpose except wheel bearings (according to GM you can even use it for 65-82 Corvette REAR wheel bearings, but I don't).

I've heard many mention Kable Ease. It's what I'm going to attempt to get and use. Corvette Central has it...

American Grease Stick ( AGS ) Kable Ease. It used to be in a tube or larger squirt can. Dale

Us the stuff Central has, but As a rebuilder of speedometers I would advise NOT to put regular grease on a speedometer cable!
Graphite based will make your speedometer and tach last longer.

Back in the late 70's to mid 80's the techs at the Chevy dealer I worked for used GM Lubriplate which appeared to be similar to white lithium grease. If it is still available, maybe Joe Lucia can help with a current part #.

                      Ernie,

In the archives several people report needle bounce when using a graphite-based cable lubricant. Have you ever seen that with a graphite-lubed cable?

                        Larry,

I went to the slipkote website and sent an e-mail to one of contact addresses listed. I received a reply today from some at speclubes.com that said: "Thank you for your interest in our Slipkote speedometer grease. Unfortunately we do not sell this product any longer. The proper grease for this application is any GCLB certified wheel bearing grease which is readily available at any auto parts store."

I don't know if this means the slipkote speedo grease is no longer made or if the speclubes.com person simply doesn't carry it.

It looks like I'm going to follow-up on Joe Lucia's recommendation.

I used the Kable Ease from Corvette Central last fall when I restored my cluster. Seems to work fine.

I've got agree with Ernie about using graphite instead of grease. When I replaced my cable and adapter I spoke with a few Spedo shops that said to never use grease. It can actually work its way up the cable into the speedo (counter-clockwise rotation, I believe). Also, my adapter (at the trans mount) had failed and was caked with grease.

                              Gary,
AC Delco repair shops used a grease part # ST-700, which is no longer available. This was a clear grease and similar to petroleum jelly. The procedure was to lightly wipe the cable with grease while sliding into the casing. ALWAYS replace the cable and casing as an assembly to prevent "cable whip" which results in noise and pointer bounce. DO NOT use heavy grease such as wheel bearing grease as it will offer too much resistance in cold climates. Graphite is for door locks in the snow country.
