    Richard -

Ballast resistors weren't used after 1967 - the cloth-covered ignition wire from the bulkhead connector to the coil (+) terminal was a resistance wire, and that spade terminal also had a wire (yellow, I think) crimped in it from the starter solenoid "R" terminal to provide a full 12V when cranking. The coil (-) terminal has the black wire (from the points) from the distributor.

If you have a radio, the coil (+) terminal will also have a spade from the radio noise suppression capacitor on it.

First of all, John you have been a invaluable source of information for me during my restoration. Your articles and posts are extremely helpful. On my original '73 L82 there seems to be a slight difference from your description.

I have a black wire with "resistance" written in pink letters. Doc Rebuild shows this on his diagram also. This wire is crimped together with a cloth wire which is red, not yellow. These both go to the + side of the coil. (The red cloth wire goes to the R terminal on the starter at the other end as it should)

When I first researched this in the archives I found a few members that also had the "red" wire. Perhaps your '74 is set up the same way.

        Hi Chris

The cloth wrapped wire on my 14000 mile 73 L48 is yellow.

Tom, just curious, what is your build date on your '73? Mine is Mar 15.

Richard, with key on run the volts should be 6-8 volts through the resistance wire. During start, a full 12 volts comes through the purple wire on the S terminal.
