Not sure of the quality of Craftsman tools today but many years ago I bought some and was very disappointed with the quality, "dollar store" quality - maybe "made in China".
        Hope things have changed!

Interesting, I've been using the same handtools that I've had since I was 16, that was 45 years ago. Never broke a one.

i have never broken any craftsman tools i bought in 1961 but the crap i bought in the late 70's resulted in many busted knuckles. i gave up on their tools and switched to snap-on(more expensive but we only get one set of knuckles, which neither Sears nor Snap-on will replace when broken).mike

Some clarifications on my previous post.
In the mid 60's I bought a set of Craftsman tools, I'm still using what I have left of them and I'm still very happy with the quality.

In the early 80's (I think!) I bought more Craftsman tools to complete my set and found the quality just wasn't the same, not much different than "bargain store" tool quality.

                Re: Sears Craftsman's Club

During the mid-70's an SK-Wayne rep told me they made the handtools for Sears, then Sears changed vendors. The Sears handtools I have, other than a couple of saws, are from the 60's. There was another supplier after that but I can't remember which one.

After I rounded off the fittings on 4 brake lines, I took every Craftsman line wrench I had and threw them in the river. Snap On only for me

dickie: the specific craftsman tools that busted my knuckles were also line wrenches. the day the first one broke and busted my knuckle, i got in the truck, went back to sears and exchanged it for a new one. came home, that sucker broke too and i've not been back to the craftsman dude since/ mike

Craftsman is ok for the average weekend garage warrior. However if youre making a living with tools...you cant beat MAC or SnapOn. Use those for a weekend and your craftsmans will feel like dime store junk.

I found that out back a few years ago.

The polished Craftsman wrenches look alot like the GearWrench wrenches that are also sold at Sears.
The GearWrench stuff is made in China, I believe.

All the Craftsman tools I had I put in the farm tool box. With the bunch on yahoo's that I had working, anything was an improvement over a pair of vise grips. I kept my Snap-On box locked after I had about $2,500 worth of tools disappear. Three Fluke DVOM's, an old Simpson 260 VOM, anything that you could measure voltage with. the day before two Stihl Farm Boss chainsaws disappeared. It is unreal what the neighbor hood rogues stole from me.

My "newest" Craftsman tools are now 35+ years old and working fine - the stuff sold now is trash. Special purpose tools (I do a lot of Mercedes-Benz tinkering) come from Snap-On. Sears made a huge mistake years ago when they gave up on the quality of their product and instituted the "everyday low price" policy. Those factors that had made Sears special disappeared and so did the customers.
