    C4 Zr-1

Are there many C4 Zr-1 owners in NCRS? I just bought a 4000 mile one thats a total time warp. Original everything, including the air in the tires.
It was locked away in a garage. (wonder if the tires which still have the nubs on them are any good. they arent cracked)

Going to try and prep it for maybe a judging deal this summer. Just wondered who all out there on this site is into these cars?

Its been like 10 or 12 years since I let my membership lapse, and sold my car) but now I re-upped and plan to get back into it.

    Ron,

What year is your ZR. I have a 93 40th Anny ZR that I'm running through the NCRS system. I purchased the car last year with 16,000 miles on it. Like yours, it was kept in a garage, inside a plastic bag. The tires are original but are very hard. They are like pencil erasers. The original items on the car that have since gone the way of age and wear are the battery, they were only good for about 5-7 years depending on the outside air temp. No company has replacements, you have to take the deduct for replacement Delco Freedom type. I have had to replace the Bose unit completely. The CD unit was kaput. Check your Tech Info Manual and Judging guide. NCRS has the 90-93, which is new, and has most of the needed info, with pictures, in there. If you have any more questions just let me know.

Its a '91, and yep the battery isnt original (of course). I ordered the Judging manual, etc. So i'll dig into it.

So what did your car score?

I had my original tire '92 LT1 judged at the Michigan Regional last year. I drove it carefully on the original tires about 20 miles to get to the meet without a problem. I wouldn't drive tires that old in the rain.

          Welcome back!

Good luck with your ZR1. They are neat cars and you'll find there are several members here who own them. Sounds like a perfect example for judging.

I have a 94 that I bought last year from the original owner, 10k miles. He had the original window sticker and all of the paper work. I got the feeling he must have babied the heck out of it. The first think I had to do was change the plugs because they were fouled pretty bad. Other than that, it was in perfect condition except for the clutch slave cylinder and CD player.

I have noticed that not many people, even in the Corvette community, know that much about these cars. It's probably my favorite car that I have even owned.

I realize its all about the older cars. I get it. They are the neatest looking ones, and easier to work on for sure. Ok, well when I get a chance, i'll get her detailed and off to a meet somewhere. Probably a regional, so there is a better chance of somebody knowing how to judge the thing, since they are new to the mix.

I was shocked to even see they were included. I think when I left back in the 90's, it was up to '82.

I wonder if a "stock car" style tire softener (not a harsh one) would rejuvenate these tires?? They arent cracked at all, but im sure they are as hard as a truck dock bumper.

I would start at a Chapter meet. You'll learn what the judges are looking for in terms of minor rust and paint chips. Then before you go to a Regional, you'll know what minor condition repairs to make.

I would be careful about tire dressing because you may get a deduction if it is obvious.

                    Ron,
Let me fill you in on my trek through the NCRS system. First I had the car test judged at Las Vegas in April 2007, by a number of the C-4 judging team. From that test judging and others throughout the year, to include photos, the first (test) edition manual was published. In Sept. of 2007, the 93 corvette became eligible for NCRS judging, and the second (permanent) edition was released by NCRS. I drove the car to Leavenworth, Wa. to the 2007 N/W Regional, for the first real judging meet. I scored 100% which included 11 mileage points, the net raw score was 96.8. This allowed me to have the car P/Vd, at the 2008 N/W in Bend Oregon, which I passed, that is a whole different story. I still need a Regional 97 or better, which I'm going to attempt at the Western Regional, at Lake Tahoe, in May of this year. Then, in July of this year, I will present the car for The Dave Hill Mark of Excellence in San Jose, Ca. I don't know how many of these awards have been presented, but I am hoping Mr. Hill will be present so I can ask him to sign the underside of my hood. I was not lucky enough to have Mr. or Mrs Duntov preform the same when I received the like kind award for my 1957 corvette.

There is a very active and involved part of the NCRS community who are up to their necks in the C-4 in General and many of the higher level C-4 judges are ZR-1 owners. You will find a very welcoming group of appreciative folks when you bring the car out to any of the larger events. When I finished the "Crossed Flags" process with my '89, there was a ZR-1 sitting right next to me also finishing the process (both successfully) met a lot of great people very devoted to and knowledgable of the entire range of C-4 cars.

I've been judging the late C-4 class since it was admitted to judging. I test judged Ed Hoffman's car in LV and regionally in Leavenworht. It's a beauty. I recently added a '90ZR-1 to my collection and intend to drive it. It's got 17.5K milles and has been well taken care of. Peter Mahr from Hilton Head took his 1990 ZR-1 through the judging process to McClellan after it had more than 30K miles on it. With some reasonable prep these cars show great. Bring it out. We'ed love to see it. Good luck.

Those black hats go crazy over the oil filter on a ZR-1. Better be original or they will faint!

Glad to see you in the NCRS, Ron. I've got a 90 Zee, 15,040 miles. One thing you have to do with these cars is wind them up every now and then - they like the high rpms. If you don't they tend to carbon up.

BTW, if one of you has a PF-970 I'd love to have a good (no flash) hi-def picture. I've got four PF-970C, but they aren;t what I need for a 90.

I'm another member of the C4 Team, and would love to have a crack at it. I mean see it.

                              I found this remark amusing:
Probably a regional, so there is a better chance of somebody knowing how to judge the thing, since they are new to the mix.

I assume you mean the cars are "new to the mix". Most of the 90-93 Team members at Regionals have been judging C4s since they were accepted for Flight Judging. If you had brought it to Kissimmee this year, it would have been Judged by 10 Master Judges, several of whom earned their Black (and Red) Hat judging C4s.

These cars may be recent additions to the NCRS judging field, but the judges have quite a bit of experience with them. I can't think of any of us that aren't C4 owners. And as Bill said, many are ZR-1 Owners as well.

Good Luck in your endeavors with the ZR-1. We're here to help any way we can.
                              Regards,
                              Dave
Yes "cars to the mix" I didnt mean to get anybodys undies in a wad....I only said regional because I got a note from an NCRS "elder" who said the "bench wasnt that deep on these so ask ahead before you bring it to a meet"

Thats all I meant. Anyway....i'll bring it...you all have at it.
