63 Carpet & Dash Pad Skin Questions

Need to get some information on installing carpet. I have a 1963 Convertiable and have sent off the cluster, clock and radio for restoration. Now I am on to the part that I hope I can do by myself, hopefully with help.

    1. Should I use pad? I know that orignally a 63 did not, just wondering.
    2. If I get the car judged would they count against the car if I did use it?
    3. If I use, do I glue it down to pan and then glue carpet to underlayment?
    4. If no underlayment do I just glue foam backed carpet to pan and what is the best adhesive to use?
    5. Is there suppose to be a cover in the void where you run the antenna wire and other wires to rear of car? Mine did not have when I took old carpet out but seems like something needs to be there.

    6. Has anyone had luck with dying the dash pad skins, not the center buth the right and left pads? Please tell me yes so I don't have to spend $700.00.

Any inforamtion that might be helpfull to someone that has proablly bit off more than he can handle would be greatly appreciated. I do have the assembly manual, judging guide and many other books that I have read. It just seems like none of them tell the entire story.

    Thanks in advance.

I had my 63 Couple dash pad dyed and they came out great. My were not cracked just worn. My interior is red and I did excellent when my car was judge of the past two years. If your pads are in good shape, I feel that the way to go instead of repops. Just my opinion.

I agree on the dash pads if they are in good condition several vendors sell the interior color stain and it works well. If the vinyl is cracked I would replace them. I have seen others here with different opinions on the dash replacement. I just can't see spending many hours on the interior and installing old pads that won't look good. zi don't think repairs of the vinyl will hold up well.
I did not install pad under the carpet. It didn't come that way and will get picked up in judging. The only value is to make the interior a little cooler.
I attached a photo of the rear of my car when I replaced the carrpet. It may help you. I find by taking alot of photos as I take things apart it's easier to put them back together.

            Greg, you asked:
            5. Is there suppose to be a cover in the void where you run the antenna wire and other wires to rear of car? Mine did not have when I took old carpet out but seems like something needs to be there.

If your talking about the door opening area, yes there are Carpet Support panels that cover the wiring. See page 55 in the Assmb. Manual (Section 1 Sheet B11.00, item 11) They snap into the existing clips.

Attached are come picture of my dash "before and after it was dyed. For those checking out the picture, the original correct black door knobs were installed after this show. This was a indoor show I was asked to display the car in right after I completed it and before the car was judged by the NCRS.

Thanks, I will look at that in the AM. I knew something was missing.

It does look good. So did you leave the dash and pads installed and just sprayed them in your car?

They were taken out then re-installed. It was a major pain, but they came out nice. Jeff

Jeff, that came out sweet. How did you apply the dye. Sprayed it on, waited a short time, then wiped the remaining off??? I'm not sure I could have the same kind of success on mine. The previous owner dyed from dark blue to black. I have the correct skins and I also have some dark blue dye. Some one suggested using acetone to see if I could get the black dye off.

                          Greg -

No cover aft of the door opening - only adjacent to the sill plates.
