    AACA Charlotte April

I am taking a car to Charlotte April 4th AACA event to have it judged. Any suggestions as to places to stay and what I should expect from the AACA verses NCRS. I know the NCRS is all Vettes but my thinking is the AACA awards are good and fun to win as well. It is only 3 hours from where I live.

Close hotel recommendations and suggestions are appreciated.

    Re: AACA Charlotte April

    Hello:

AACA is very nice and the biggest auto club in the U.S. I have been a member for about 4 years. I have been to two national meets with my
69 Camaro Z28. Even though mine is numbers matching there judges do
not look at the numbers. They are looking for "factory appearance" and
look to make sure your options where available from when the car was
made. It nice to have a AIM with you to prove options where available.
(I was asked several times) Have found that attending a AACA meet is
far more relaxing and less pressure than NCRS or B/G. IMHO

I think you'll enjoy the AACA judging. The only time I've had my '69 judged was at one of their state meets that was held in Pinehurst. Most of the NCRS events in NC are in the Charlotte area. I won the top award in my class and saw some really nice antique cars. There are many hotels near Lowes MSW if that's where the show is held. You can Google it and find them. AACA probably has a host hotel too.

On Corvettes, they do not judge trim tags, stamps, dist. numbers, etc. You get into the classics such as Dusenbergs, Packards, etc. some of the best experts on the planet judge those cars. As has been stated they just look at each section and determine in their mind if they appear original and to what degree. They use no manuals as NCRS or Bloomington does. Awards for first time car are 1st Junior, 2nd Junior, 3rd Junior, or certificate of appreciation. I know of cars with bad stamps and repro trim tags getting top awards.

All marques of cars do not have clubs such as NCRS. AACA provides a venue for them to get judged.

                  Re: AACA Charlotte April

The basic philosophy behind AACA judging is to evaluate a vehicle in terms of how it could have looked when it arrived at the dealer's from the factory. They judge in four general areas: exterior, interior, chassis and engine. They allow for any feature, option or accessory that would have been available from the factory for the vehicle's model year -- be sure you have documentation for anything unusual. Also, be sure you have a fully charged, UL approved fire extinguisher visible and available; without it, you'll be disqualified. AACA tries to assign judges to classes they're most familiar with, but the judging sheets are written so that in-depth knowledge of a particular make/model/year is not absolutely required, which is why some cars with what seem like obvious errors still can receive awards. I'm an AACA judge so if you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me privately. Enjoy the experience!

AACA does use a Judging Manual. It is just not specific to Corvette.

                      Re: AACA Charlotte April

I went to a local AACA show at a ford dealership - there were 4 C1 & C2's there. I had the only car out of the 4 to display Duntov & Triple Crown awards, also was the only vette not to win an award. The next day I called the fellow that ran the show and asked If I could get a copy of my sheets - told him I wanted to see what areas I had to improve in. I was told that all sheets were thrown away right after the show and they have a problem with vettes as no one in the club really knows anything about them. I was asked why I did not tell anyone that I was free to judge, when I asked if I was a judge would I be able to judge my own car and was told no. I never went to another one and I think they stopped. I am sure a National would be a whole other thing, I might like to try one if it's close enough. Enjoy.

"Local AACA" shows are the equivalent to Cruise-ins and they do not follow the National Judging standards. You can not volunteer judge at an AACA Meet without proper training credentials like judging school attendance, continuing judges education, etc. Local AACA meets are doing more damage to AACA than they realize because of the confusion and poor judging standards that they promote. There is no National Award availability when attending local AACA shows.

                          Hi Chuck,

There are enough reasons in your answer to figure out why they don't have the show any more - they had enough AACA Banners flying all over the place. Appreciate the info. will try to get to a larger show if held in the area.

                            Edward,

There is a National Meet in Gettysburg this year. I'm taking the '66 Primer Car to Charlotte and probably my '58 Fuelie to Gettysburg. Great venue.
