1964 rear emergency brake cable

Hi All, was in the process of installing new rear E-cables and noticed the JG calls for a smooth 'torpedo' shaped rubber boot where it exits the torque arm. Believe this applies to 65 disc brake set up, not the 64 which goes directly into the backing plate of rear brake assembly. There is a small stepped boot on the cable side going towards the equalizer and rod on each rear cable. My 64 AIM show no boot, the 65 AIM shows the 'torpedo' boot. Don't remember any boots on my 63 cables, long time ago though!

Dan, here are two pictures of interest for the Parking Brake Cable. The rubber boot the JG refers to I believe is not smooth, has some ribs on it. These are original items. Alan

Thanks Alan, nice picture of 64 boot. It's correct. What the 63/64 JG is calling out is for a 65 up 'torpedo' shaped boot as availble from Paragon etc. to fit onto the cable end at the trailing arm, the 64 doesn't have the cable mounted on the trailing arm, it goes directly into the backing plate of the drum brake assembly. Also, did your original cables have the short 'rubber sleeve' protector on it? I think those sleeves were on service replacement cables from GM. My 64 AIM calls the emergency brake cable a part of rear axle assembly, so I would assume it got a nice shot of 'blackout' with the rest of the rearend prior to being installed on the chassis.

Do not see any other rubber stuff on parking brake cable back there. Just what was it and where?

Alan, the ones I bought back in the 80's had a 5" thin wall rubber sleeve about in the middle of the spiral case. My originals back then didn't have the sleeve. Maybe the service rear cable for the 64's was also to fit the 65 on models and it was a 'rub' guard since they were mounted differently?
