I think most of the die hards will suggest against using the 4 ohm speakers. Many advise that it is hard on the transistor / amp. It can cause it to overheat.

I am no expert and am sure one will chime in with better advise.

      Ed,

There are brand new 10 ohm speakers available through GM, so I wouldn't see a need to use 4 ohm speakers. In theory, you "could" use them but you're much better off with new ones or to have your originals "reconed."

Agree! The design center was for 10 ohm speakers. Substituting an 8 ohm speaker (very common) gets you so close to the design center, there's little, if any, affect. But, dropping down to 4 ohms is wandering a bit too far off design center in my opinion...

Bare in mind that if you're considering the use of aftermarket versus original or GM service replacement speakers, it's going to be hard to find off-the-shelf 10-ohm units... Most of what's sold in substantial quantity today come in 4, 8, or 16 ohm nominal formats...
