1960 Clutch Pedal Push Rod Dimension Dilemna!

    Gents,

The 60 Vette is coming along nicely as I have been buying and assembling every part / nut / bolt to ensure this baby is correct.

A long time ago the original owner had the original transmission swapped out for a 64 Muncie. I have since bought and restored a date coded Borg Warner and have purchased the necessary hardware to ensure all is correct. Without knowing dimensions of the original cutch pedal push rod, etc., I can't determine if the original parts I have are correct for the original transmission I bought.

Can anyone tell me the length of the clutch pedal push rod? The rod I have measures approximately 17 and 1/4 inches.

I was assembling the clutch pedal over-center spring step by step using the 60 vette shop manual; pages 11-3 and 11-4. Everything was going smooth until I was attaching the clutch pedal push rod back onto the clutch pedal assembly. I also loosened the bottom bolt closest to the pedal itself so the bracket could swivel for adjustment (there is an oblonged hole there for the bracket to move up and down). However, the rod will not match the hole on the bracket. Maybe I have to push the bracket down the oblonged hole to make the rod match the upper bolt hole on the bracket? The bracket assembly on the clutch pedal looks a tad different than the one pictured in the diagram on page 11-3, so I can't tell if that was swapped out or not when the original owner installed the 1964 transmission.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Jim

My '59 push rod measures 18-1/8 end-to-end. It has a slight kink in about the middle.

      Bill,

I may have the wrong rod as mine doesn't have a bend.

Can anyone else chime in to assist me to determine if I have the wrong clutch pedal rod?

      Thx,

      Jim

        Jim:

The bend goes with the two-position clutch pedal bracket that allows a normal and a quick pedal travel.

I should avoid C1 questions because they often get me in trouble, but here's what I can tell you:

There were TWO different clutch pedal pushrods used for C1 Corvettes. The first was GM #3723597. It was used for 1955-58 Corvettes. It was 18" OL and it was completely straight with no bends. On one end it had an eyelet (flattened area with hole) and on the other end a 90 degree bend with a clevis pin.

The second design was used for 1959-62 Corvettes. It was GM #3757618. This rod had a slight bend in the center, but I don't know its overall length. However, it had an otherwise different configuration than the 55-58 rod inasmuch as it had an eyelet on BOTH ends and NO 90 degree bend with a clevis pin.

              Thanks Bill.

I must have the wrong rod, because this car had the original tranny swapped for a 64 Muncie. The rod I have is perfectly straight. I'm guessing they changed out the rod; maybe even the bracket as well. I have run into all sorts of mind bending issues with this car because the original transmission was swapped out, and I instaleld a correct original date coded BW T-10 with the correct date code; a rare find I'm sure.

I have to hit the road for a few days and when I get back I will post pictures of the rod and the bracket so hopefully I can determine just what I have and just what I need to buy.

              Thx again Bill.

                Jim:

Here's a picture of the installed bracket. I believe this is in the "fast" position. I can e-mail higher resolution photos if that would help.

These parts are original to this car.

Looks like the production bracket to me. All you need is the correct rod.
