    63 L84 fuel pump

Is this pic the correct 4657 fuel pump for a 63 L84 engine?

    Thanks, Mike

Michael, Looks good to me. Only had one cup of coffee though so better wait for other opinions. There was some discussion about frog pads on early 4657 pumps so check that out, they are visable from the top.

There is also a date code on the pump. It's deep inside one of the circular recessions on the side. I can't remember the format but it's there. It is almost impossible to see with a magnifying glass.

Not to hi-jack the post, but who is the best at rebuilding an original pump like that? Mine has never been touched so I'm sure that it will let go now that I'm thinking about it.

Perry, I rebuilt mine myself. I had the mating surfaces broached flat and followed the 63 service manual. I think I reused the original springs and lever that contacts the push rod.

Mike, Can't tell if that's the real deal 63 pump or not. Your pic is upside down. Need to see the other side of the pump to see if all the screw bosses are the same configuration.
If two of the bosses that are tapped for the 10/32 screws have two flat pad that the boys nickname "frog pads" then the pump would be incorrect.
Another way to tell is to ask the seller of there is a suffix after the 4657 #'s. If there is then you know for sure the pump is just a service replacement for a 63.
Now I don't think many of the judges are up on this stuff though. If they are then that's good as I don't mean to be demeaning to them.
On my 63, the LWC the engine was ready to go back in the chassis when I told David to hold the phone as we had to change the fuel pump first. I had a frog pad pump on it until Jorjorian told me it was a fake. His exact words. So then I found one on ebay that came in a dated white/red box. The pump has a ? 62 date on it. The deep blind hole above the fitting hole is dated with a years and slashes. Can't see it on the car though unless you have all day to judge.
Real deal 63 pumps are getting hard to find. Especially NOS ones.
When you do get it rebuild step use a rebuilt kit compatable with our crap fuel. Google onto Classicpreservation.com or call Hal at 518-674-2445 for a great kit. I haven't done so myself yet but I plan on it. He advertises that his kit will withstand todays ethanol.
See page 24 in the lates "The Restorer" for more info. John D.

A NOS frog pad pump is good to buy for parts if the price is right.
Another good replacement pump to buy for a driver is an Airtex 4657. Really good pump except for judging.

If rebuilding yourself look at Tim's instructions. But use a granite surface plate to lap the two halves and the bottom cover, etc nice and flat to help prevent a leak. Don't use a sheet of glass or a hunk of kitchen counter top as they ain't flat. Use a machinists surface plate.

That fuel pump is already mine, I just wanted to verify its correctness before I put it on the engine and put the engine in the car. It doesn't have a "suffix" after the 4657, but it does have the "frog pads" that John described, so it looks like I may have to find a real one quickly, or change it later...

              Thanks, Mike
