Not a 1972, but why would the finish of these parts change?

The part numbers for any of the involved components did not change between 1970 and 1972. However, it's possible that alternate finishes were specified for some of the components. The part I would most suspect this possibility for would be the lower bracket (which was part of the lock assembly) through which the screws fasten. It's possible that the finish specified was either black phosphate or semi-gloss black paint. I have noted over the years that there are a fair number of parts of the same part number that could be found in either of these finishes, leading me to believe that they were specified optionally at the discretion of the supplier.

Notwithstanding the above, whatever the finish actually was on Jerome's bracket, it appears to me to be the same on yours. I can't really tell if it was painted or black phosphate.

As far as the finish on the screws goes, both yours and Jerome's appear to me to be black phosphate, which is just what I would expect. I doubt that black paint was an optional finish for the screws, anyway.

I suppose alternate suppliers could have chose different finishes as well. I am convinced mine is black phosphate -- both the bracket and the screws. Your earlier post about screws being rarely painted is quite rational. The only exception I can think of is the six screws that hold the left and right dash panels to the upper dash on the 1968-1972s. Those were painted interior color.

          Terry----

Interior screws are generally the only ones that may be supplied to PRODUCTION with a painted finish. There are a few others that may become painted after their installation on the car, though.

            How's this -

is it possible that 69/70 brackets are black phosphate, and 71-2 are black painted?
Such a change would also not be unusual. There are other brackets on the car that change finishes over these 4 years.

So how many other 69-72 owners can chime in with their observations?

              Sure that could be too.

I should stay away from interiors -- other than to drive -- they are not my strong suit.

I believe that is correct, Patrick...I agree with Terry, my very late 70 brackets were black phoshate.

I've thought that from the beginning of this thread, but didn't say anything because I don't trust my memory enough to be the contrarian in some cases these days. Terry's pics brought it all back.

My original owner 70's seat hardware have about the same appearance of except I have installed the spacers under my brackets. I still have the cloth bag they came in.
