Should it have a rubber gasket underneath, or doe it affix directly to the deck lid? (The ferrule through which the rear-most HT bolts pass through the deck lid?) Can't find a reference in my AIM.

Re: mid-year deck lid HT ferrule
I believe there was a washer used. It was GM #3831541. It was a rubber washer of 1/2" size. It was discontinued from SERVICE without supercession in October, 1979.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Mine were installed by the dealer in 1963 when they added my H.T. as a dealer installed option. Mine do NOT have any washers of any sort and I believe, due to the thickness of the fiberglass, the crimps would not have enough length to fully engage the panel when bent over (from the way they look). I don't know how they did it at the factory.

The original washers were very thin and probably didn't change the installed height of the ferrule by more than several tho.
It's difficult to install the ferrules and get the tabs bent so the ferrule is snug in the fiberglass. I've used a 1/4-20 bolt, nut and washers to compress the ferrule and tabs but even with that, they never seem to lay down tightly.- Top

Michael, I agree. That is how I installed mine. And you are right, they are very difficult to get installed correctly and look right.

Re: mid-year deck lid HT ferrule
The rubber sealing washers shown in the A.I.M. were only to be installed under the hardtop bolt head when the hardtop was NOT installed, to keep water from leaking into the rear compartment. When the car was shipped from St. Louis, the hardtop was installed on the car, and the rubber washers were placed in the bag in the glove box with the hardtop wrench.
The note on the washers (Section C07, sheet A6, item #23) refers to the Miscellaneous Shipping List (UPC 0, sheet C1), where the washers (P/N 3827499) are shown to be placed in the bag.
Installation of the sealing washers when removing the hardtop is also covered on page 29 of the Owner's Manual ("...with the seal rings found in the glove box...").- Top

I think the rubber washer that Mike was refering to was the one that is to be installed under the ferrule. That would be a 3831541 washer, item #18. (in a 63 AIM)
The 3827499, item #23, was an IP compartment item, as you stated.- Top

Re: mid-year deck lid HT ferrule
Yup, that's correct - the 3831541 is a thin rubber washer, and it goes between the bottom of the ferrule and the surface of the deck lid.- Top

Re: mid-year deck lid HT ferrule
The smaller 3827499 is the rubber washer shipped in the I.P. compartment for use under the mounting bolt when the hard top is removed.Last edited by Michael H.; July 1, 2009, 09:07 PM.- Top

Re: mid-year deck lid HT ferrule
As it appears we have the deck ferrule installation well addressed, I'd like to ask a silly but related question; I rarely have my hardtop mounted on my car due to the current warm climate in which I now reside, but when I have (such as for shipping), I have always had a difficult time applying the hold down nuts and washers to the deck lid (captive) bolts due to the close quarters of the convertible top frame. I believe the last time I did it, I held the top up off the front latches with a broom with the deck lid released. One other time, as the moving distance was short, I left them out altogether.
Does anyone have a good method for applying these nuts and washers?
