Re: Headlamp Vaccum Hose Tape 72
1972 did not use the clear filament style of tape. That ended in 1970.
I think that the only types of wrapping used are the wide "non-sticky" tape that is on all the wiring, and the black cloth tape used to bundle the hoses together. There may be some "black electrical tape" also used in bundling but I'd have to go look.
This picture shows the black cloth tape as used on some of the vacuum lines to help bundle. It is here on the PCV line. I have used black cloth electrical tape, as it's as close as I could find.

Re: Headlamp Vaccum Hose Tape 72
Yes, it's a form of cloth tape. I talked a reproduction wiring harness vendor into spotting me a 3-foot section of what he uses (have to cut the width down to match what was used in this application).
Since, I've found the same tape was used on other cars/trucks of the era to hold wiring harness assy's together when they were routed along the same path. The most common place to find 'pristine' pieces of the factory original cloth tape material is in the trunk areas of similar era passenger cars (e.g. Cadillac) and you can 'harvest' some at your local scrap yard...- Top

However, here in Michigan cars from the 60's and 70s rusted out and were turned into scrap by about... 1980. Thus, I use what I can easily find since there is no way to "easily find" a scrap car of similar vintage to my Corvettes.

Re: Headlamp Vaccum Hose Tape 72
Ed,
I searched a lot of places and then found the perfect match at Home Depot. 3M Friction Tape, in the electrical section. Even has the white strings through it.
