'63 L84 intake manifold orange overspray

I'm nearly at a stage that the engine could get painted. I just haven't seen any good examples of how the over spray on the intake manifold was applied in the factory. Does anyone has some nice pictures of original engines with the typical over spray on the intake manifold?

On eBay some time ago an original engine was for sale but this one didn't show any traces of such an over spray on the intake manifold (see pics).

PS I have many more pictures from different angles of this engine...

    thanks,
    Rob.

Re: '63 L84 intake manifold orange overspray

Rob, assume its a FI engine from pictures so
the over spray will be silver. The area between valve covers and intake will be all silver including the gaskets in that area, intake & valve, however think the valve gasket is mainly on bottom. The front gets hit with silver enough to cover the goose neck including the bolts - my original nozzle blocks showed silver on front of front blocks (not the rears). The bypass heater hose and clamp also show some silver. Michael Hanson has some great pictures of this. Try some searches back in 07 since I asked the same questions.

I'm confused, from some earlier discussions on other model years engine paint process (i.c.w. aluminium intakes) I'd learned the overspray should be orange (from painting the engine). Are you saying this was in 1963 things were different with the L84's?

        Rob,
L-36 is a 427/390 HP (entirely orange engine/manifold and overspray), not a fuelie as shown (L-84?). If that's the case, you may want to modify the title of the thread to increase readership.
        Regards,
        Jeff

          Sorry I meant a L84 (I'm confused with my '69 car now)...

Hi Rob. The edges of the adapter plate, and the entire surface of the head between the adapter and the valve cover is painted silver.

Alan Drakes description is spot on.

              Rob,

Heres a few pics of an early 63 L84, showing the color between the base plate and rocker cover. I'm not sure how correct this engine is, perhaps someone can comment.

                Rob,
High Performance Small Blocks with Aluminium Valve Covers were painted silver along the intake to cover the exposed area between the intake and the valve covers. Only engines with painted steel valve covers had orange overspray on the alum. intake (i.e. High Perf. Big Blocks.)
                Hope this helps.

Re: '63 L84 intake manifold orange overspray

                  Does this means that:

                  a) the intake manifold was sprayed silver while fitted on the engine, or
                  b) was the silver applied over the completely orange engine just to fill up the area's between intake and rocker cover, or
                  c) was painted silver in the area between intake without orange underneatch, or
                  d) other scenario?

                  thanks for your help,
                  Rob.

here is a photo I copied from Patrick Hulst post some time ago, it shows a great recreation of how the silver looks.

                      Nice pic.

We painted ours orange, and then masked it in a manner similar to St. Louis. I then painted the silver on the intake and the areas along the intake/head mating surface.

FI judges and car owners take note: Notice the length of the phillip head air cleaner adapter screws. Those are the real deal.
Also notice the PCV hose with the diamond pattern. Very nice hose. The drive cable housing though is not typical of what we would like to see. It appears to be a GM service replacement. Notice how long the crimps are. Some think that just repros are like this but the last ones sold by GM had the real long crimps.
But that hose is very special indeed. Nice pics. JD

Thanks Patrick, these shots really help in understanding the order of painting needed. Should the little water hose and clamps receive some overspray (silver and/or orange)?

                              Rob,
"Should the little water hose and clamps receive some overspray (silver and/or orange)?"
Believe the hose was hit with orange first then the silver was done thus silver exists on the start of the hose and terminates mid way on the hose clamp.
Remember this was not an exact science so a big +/- should be acceptable. I would think that the point deduct for these details would not approach 1.
