    71 carb Question

If I have an engine with a build date of August 18th what would be the latest acceptable carberator date for this engine. Is 085 date too late.

    Vincent,

You need to think of the day the car was built, not the day the engine was built. The carb was installed on the engine trim line in St. Louis, so in theory it could be dated after the engine.

Look at your body build date (or alternately estimated date of production of the car), and go backward from there.

Depends - what motor/trans/carb are you talking about?
If it's a Quadrajet then the date appears to be the wrong format.
        If it's a Holley that's a different story.

What day is 085 and what day is B01?
As long as 085 precedes B01, you're OK.

085 is the 5th week of August, 1970. That would be too late. You would need one that is no later than 082, in my way of thinking.

                Vincent,
                Here is two real examples:
1970 - Engine V0702CTK Holley is dated 031 (March 1970, 1st week). List 4555. Car build July 8, 1970. 2 months prior to car build.
1971 - Engine V0303CGZ Holley is dated 082 (August 1970, 2nd week). Car build May 11, 1971. Interesting thing about this Holley is that it is dated approximately 9 months prior to build date of the car but it has the 71 List Number of 4801. 70 LT-1's had a list of 4555. In spite of the 6 month rule used in NCRS judging this carb. has been found correct in both flight and Bowtie judging. Logic prevails.

                  Mike,

I am curious to understand your statement above.

Are you just saying that you do not think it is realistic that a Holley carb which was built in last week of August made it to St Louis plant and then was installed on a car all within a week (since B01 is September 1st)?

Vincent my old 71 LT-1 1914 built B9 Holley was 084 most of the other item like Alternator, Starter, Distributor, etc were about 2-3 week before final assembly. Hope that helps. Paul 18046

                        Re: 71 carb Question

I'm confused. I thought NCRS used the 6 month rule--yes or no? My 71 LT-1 was built F28(Jan 28,71) and my original Holley carb is 094 (4th week of September 1970). The article "The Dating game" Part IV by Mike Ernst showed a 71 LT-1 built Nov 27, 1970 D25 and its Holley was built 085 (5th week August, 1970). As long as the Holleye carb was built within 6 months prior to the build date it was acceptable. I had the corvette mechanic at a major Chevrolet dealership pull the valve covers to check the oil guides and he said everything was original and the engine has never ben worked on--same when I had the trasnmission rebuilt 3 months ago.

Paul I think what is being said here is that the carb I was looking at was dated the week pryor to the build date of the car, which may be to close together. You should be fine.
                          My 71LT1 build is B01
the carb was 085, week before.
