    Re: Alternator rebuild

Alternator creates alternating voltage/current. The raw output is diode rectified delivering 'lumpy' DC. The rectified waveform is then 'smoothed' up before final output as quasi-constant DC. The capacitor is there to smooth the output.

Todd the attachement screw that is not insulated goes in the hole closest to the two terminals that protrude from the voltage regulator.
One insulated screw will connect the diode trio to the voltage regulator and the other insulated screw goes in the hole closest to the tab on the voltage regulator that can be grounded with a screwdriver when the alternator is assembled.
You can use a toothpick inserted in the hole to hold the brushes back to assemble the alternator. The toothpick can be removed after assembly.
Todd after viewing your original first post, the left screw hole in your picture of the voltage regulator does not get a insulated screw.

        Thanks,
I rebuilt my alternator and it is working fine, it was a bad voltage regulator. I also replaced the brushes, since they were only $4.00. I spent $25.00 total, and although it is not original, it is the first alternator I have rebuilt. It was relatively straight forward. Now when I find an original, that needs rebuilt, I will not be hesitant about ripping it apart.

Again thanks for all the input.

Chassis Overhaul manuals of the era have a detailed section on rebuilding 10-SI alternators along with static resistance checks for all internal components except the regulator. It's a fairly easy job, but time consuming and worth the effort if you have the correct OE part number.

The most common cause of alternator failure is the voltage regulator.
